I've done it, I went ahead and created the first hummingbird helicam.

Equiped with full motion live color video downlink. This is the next generation in high tech surveilance systems :-)

I have pics of the setup in my gallery and should have some video shot from the onboard system tomorrow. I used the smallest video transmitter I have and the smallest camera I have. I intend on running them from the flight battery to save weight. I will probably switch to li-poly for extra duration and to make up for the additional current draw.

It should work pretty well, we'll know for sure tommorow.

It will be interesting tpknow if it will carry the added weight.
Please keep us posted with your findings. Great idea by the wasy. I hope that it works. I hear that Century is releasing a up-graded motor, that might make a difference. I know very little about the Li-Poly batterys, but are they not something like .2 C?

Thanks, Flyboy

With Ease

The first test flights of the hummingbird helicam are completely successful. I have some video I shot of the first test flights. I will post it on my web site today. I hope to have some video from the onboard system today also.

The only thing left to do is a few small bits of wiring for the transmitter and camera. Minimal weight added with the whole setup.

It flies great, still very stable. I wish I had a gram scale to weigh the additional components. If you want any more info I'd be glad to share.

Update

The Hummercam was a limited success. The camera & transmitter work great. Running from the same battery as the motor. At low RPM the picture is there and is good. Bring up the rpm and the picture is distorted by interference. I might try a seperate battery pack for the camera, But I'm worried about the weight. I need the help of an electonics expert to determine if any type of filter could be used to eliminate the interference. I'm not going to give up just yet.

The system works with the motor running but as soon as the RPM goes up the interference starts. If anyone can help with this let me know.

The heli lifts the exta weight no problem. Li-Polys with two separate batteries is my other hope. But I have no no Li-polys yet or a charger to charge them. As soon as I can get my hands on some to do some testing I'm back to it. This will work if I can filter the interference.

Thanx, Ken

Video

I tried playing your video directly from your site but it's so slow, so I tried
downloading it and still so slow, it timed out...tried 2x.

Is there a way to post Videos directly here in RunRyder?

I also have some videos that I want to share, taken at our electric indoor flying event.. (last week there are @ six Hummers present ).

A lil new to Video Editing

Im a little new a computer video editing. I've been trying to get the size down, playing with different CODECs and compression settings, but Ive been having a little trouble finding the correct combination of quality and file size. I'm workin on it.

Hummingbird Video

Check out this video.

Taken during the weekly indoor electric fun fly in Edmonton.
As you can see on the video, I crashed "hard landed" 3-times.
I broke only the landing gear, which gave me a chance to cut it and
make the legs the same length, result was more good looking heli,
and flying characteristics in the same as original.

Edmonton Hummingbird Scene

Is that you Fred?

Rumor has it that there is a gaggle of Hummer flyers there. I noticed another flying by in the video also.

Looks good.

Eliminating interference

Hope this is still relevant... When using the same power source, you must filter the power going to the camera. There are 2 options. First you should try a common-mode filter. As complex as it may sound, it involves just finding a ferrite bead or toroid from some electronic appliance. Ferrite looks like a small dark gray material (it is made of compressed iron powder). You should take both power leads going to the camera and pass the through the ferrite. If using a bead, it already has holes drilled. If using a toroid, make one of two windings with both positive and negative leads going in the same direction and then solder them to the battery connector.
If this doesn't help, you need to make a voltage regulator with filter. I can draw you such a circuit upon request. Parts cost is minimal at $2-3 and weight is marginal. Let me know.
