I don't think I'm getting adequate cooling to the engine because its running hot even while very rich (needles: 2 turns on hover, 1.5 on full, and the low at factory set position). I'm using an MP2, 15% Powermaster Heli fuel w/20% oil, and an O.S #8. For those of you with this engine/heli combination, how much of the fan shroud did you need to cut away to clear the carb? Is there a trick to setting up the shroud to get the maximum air flow over the head? I just can't get this engine to run cool. I think I'll try switching fuel brands. Any suggestions?

i just bent my rear fan mounts outward

I also shortened up the screws cause they were hitting the head slightly. Ive got 2 gallons on mine and the shroud is fine and the engine does not over head in the slightest (it might be cause its bloody cold up here though

Thanks for the reply Harbinger, I also shortened the screws slightly for clearance... This is the second engine in this heli that ran a little warm (first was a c-spec) so I know there's nothing wrong with the motor(s).

Hey Will, just curious as to how you know it is hot. What is your method of finding the temp readings? Temp probe, finger touch, etc.

I ask because my MP2 gets real hot, but my YS91 backplate is touchable and does not burn. Seems like the MP2 gets hotter than my Hatori did.

Your right, the MP2 usually runs very hot, but in my situation the backplate is too hot to touch for more than about 1-2 seconds... I don't know an exact temperature.
In the manual, YS reports to have found the best performance with Powermaster or Cool Power 30% heli blend. Would this have a favorable effect on temperature or would it run even hotter than 15%?

If it can run cooler on 30% then I'll definitely try that. I haven't tried to squeeze power out of it at all. This engine has less than a tank of gas through it. I set the needles according to the manual for break in and had to richen it from there. It was sloppy rich by the time I shut it down to investigate why it was hot.
I think I'll switch fuels and get a new fan shroud removing as little material as possible. If that doesn't work I'll just throw it off a cliff.

Just a thought here. Did you remember to close the tank vent after fuelng up?

Have you checked the fan carefully to make sure the fan hub has not broken loose from the fan blades? I have seen this happen. It will turn at idle but slip at operating rpm. Both of my YS91's ran cold during breakin when set rich. I use a 20% coolpower blend. One has a Hatori and the other a MP2. What headspeed/blades are you running? Something sound strange with your setup.

Thank You for all your great suggestions.

Well I have found that I was getting fuel leakage past the vent fitting on the tank. Hopefully fixing this will cure the problem. Should I use some silicone to plug this up or will the fuel errode it and cause me probs? Any ideas on sealing the tank?

I also had leakage in one of the fuel tank fittings. To seal it, used a silicone o-ring intended for an r/c car shock absorber installed between the tank and the fitting. No more leaks after 5 gallons in the past month. Hope this helps..
