Is it totaly necessary to have the plastic airducting around the engine on the 32VR? I know its there to direct the airflow to the head of the engine but I wondered if anyone had taken this away and did it make any difference.

I never though about changing the air duct it always worked fine as it is. What is your plan?

I think it needs it to prevent the engine from overheating.

The shroud around the fan and going around over the cylinder head is neccesary, but the extra bit that turns the airflow through another 90 degrees could be done away with and it'd probably work just as good.In FFF the extra bit exiting directly underneath may help to drag more hot airflow out, there again it might not.If you have no real need to alter it i'd leave it as is .

I notice your handle is Craneyum, hope your first name isn't Richard

Missing quite a lot, I'd say, especially if you think 'looks' come before cooling. Helis that crash because the engine seized in flight don't look too cool.

Must stop responding to obvious trolls like this!

cooling

right then boys lets not get bitchy, The weather must be realy poor out there in Finland for you to start bitching like a girl ,too much time around the wife and not enough time flying.
I tried the V R with the shroud for one hour and checked the temperature, then i tried for one hour without and allthough a slight increase in temp by six degrees nothing that wouldn't occur on a hot summers day thanks again for your intrest

I have several hundred flights with VR 32s and 46s and cannot see any advantage to removing the fan, but I can see many disadvantages. As kits are produced to sell as cheaply as possible, why would the manufacturer go to the trouble of including a fan shroud, in two sizes (46 and 32, they are different) if they could save money by leaving it out.

Plenty of flying today, and yesterday, thank you.

Nigel,
I can almost guarantee that if you hovered the VR (or any heli) around for only 2 mins (rather than checking it just ticking over on the ground as you must have done) with no shrouds it would rapidly overheat and the power fade away to nowt
.It may be possible with the main needle about 4 turns out but most helis don't make enough power to lift their own weight with the mixture set that rich
The Concept is worse than a Space Baron (which had a very similiar shroud) for cooling as it has an inverted engine
so more heat tends to rise back into itself (the crankcase). The fully enclosed type shrouds are probably the most efficient fan cooling design there is/was.
