"The parallel cable will ONLY work with windows 95/98/ME.. Instead of the parallel port connector you can also have the Windows 95/98/ME cable made with a serial connection but the serial cable version requires the newer serial port chip on the motherboard (166550A uart). "

This is a common problem for FMS and CSM users.

2000 and XP use NT security which prevents programs from directly accessing the serial and parallel ports as you can with 95/98/ME.

Instead developers have to create specific drivers that conform with the way in which Microsoft want you to use the ports (RealFlight have done this for their sims). However, this costs money and the likes of FMS and CSM don't appear to be prepared to do this.

The surefire answer for FMS is to use a PIC-based interface. Still works on the serial port but the lead has 'intelligence' which converts from FMS spec to standard RS232 spec.

I also downloaded a driver which makes applications on 2000 and XP believe they have good old access to the parallel (and possibly the serial port). I think it sets up a dummy port which you select in your application and it does the talking to the real port.

I've not tried it myself (have no need as I use G2) but I did download it as I thought it may come in useful. I can't remember the URL but if anyone wants to try it I can email (it's pretty small as I remember). However, remember, I haven't tried it myself so no guarantees it will work.

Cheers,

Nigel

FMS leads

If you are running WIN XP or 2000 you will need a PIC based lead - checkout my website for details.

If you want a PIC based interface and you can do simple soldering then the cheapest way of getting an interface is from

http://www.welwyn.demon.co.uk/parts.htm#anchor16

He charges 16.95USD incl worldwide shipping for a complete kit of parts.

He will also sell the PIC on its own for 6USD if you want to provide the other bits. Circuit diagram is on the website.

I've built one for a friend - very simple to build and worked first time on XP.

I have no business or family relationship with the seller.

Cheers,

Nigel

Has anyone used one of these cables for FMS on Windows XP & used it on an Airtronics 6000 Super ? I need a cable but I'm undecided where to get it.
