I'm just wondering how many people pop off their links when they fold back their blades. I've never done this and I just recently heard about it.

I'm with you Mr. Twobeers, never heard/ seen that being done.....

I can't even see it as being an advantage in any way, as repeatedly taking on and off the ball links will wear them out quicktime.

I think I read it online somewhere but I also read it in MHT. I started reading Steve DiFranco's article in issue #1 (on the CD) and he talks about it and how he has to replace the links because they wear out due to being popped on and off all the time. I didn't really see a need to do it but I figured someone had a good reason to do it.

Its a first for me, and I've been at it for over 15 years.
But I've seen others remove their main blades every time their done flying. I hope they replace the locks often enough. What about the ball link wear?

I pop the links off the blade grips on my Intrepid when I fold the blades back as I can feel them bind if I dont . On my rappy 50 , seems no binding occurs. Been doing this for a few yrs now

I've seen people pop links or remove their blades after flying,
for various reasons that I have seen:
>some servos are not that easy to move after the power is off so rather
than force the geartrain.
>some heli's linkages bind when folded , and rather than move the long blades which are like levers and can tweak something,
>the heli is easier to work on and clean with the blades off,
On my own heli's if there is any binding when folding, I remove the blades , or if all seems ok then I fold them and use a blade holder.
On the heli's I have now I fold them with no probs.

I've heard of people taking their blades of, this is understandable, but unless you are getting binding or have to force the blades back to the holder, there is not point in taking the linkages off.......

Here's the deal. With your blades folded back and in the foamy thing, With links on, turn on radio...move collective and listen to your servos moan... Not good for servos is it....? Thats why I do it...

Why in the world would you turn power up your helicopter with the blades in the foam blade holder.

Whenever i want to check something on my heli at home, I ALWAYS unfold the blades first. Doesn't everyone?

I don't fold my blades, I prefer to take them off. For tranportation, they stay on. I would not power up my radio with the blades folded.

I normally remove the blades after a days flying, however if it is getting dark or I'm pressed for time I'll fold them and put them in the holder. I make sure that I'm at 0º pitch so that there is minimal stress on the system.
I read somehwere that keeping the blades in a folded position for a long period of time could put a flat spot on the dampers and possibly cause tracking problems, but I don't know it it is true or not.

ive been doing this for 4 years now--never had a problem and never seemed to cause a problem and makes the heli alot easier to transport--much better than wacking the blades.....joe

BLADES

Mike,

I have done what you said, by accident, and thought I was going to blow up a servo! I have never done it on purpose after that event.

Hey, are you going to come down for our Heli fun fly in May? Its on the weekend of the 18th. We may have JK and/or TB here for that one, as well. Let me know, and I'd be happy to help make arrangements!

Trevor
