Tight fit

It's a real tight fit and air gets trapped behind the shaft making it even harder to insert. Rocking the shaft while inserting will break the air seal.

I have the same problem. If you read the instructions it says take off the rubber insert then put in the start shaft- it should go in all the way. Then put the whole thing back in the starter. I just use the shaft half-way in right now because its nice to take it out and store real easy, and also my plank-flying friend uses it too.

even if i take the rubber cone out and put the shaft in first, it's still hard to put it in.

Yes it is hard to put in with my starter as well. It says what I said in the instructions and I guess you have to just use brute force
