I'm thinking of getting a Scorpion -6 or -8 for my 450se. I currently have a Jazz 40-6-18. What ESC are you guys running with these motors on 3S? The -6 can draw a ton of power. Also, what pinions to get over 3000 headspeed? I've searched, but I can't find what I need. Just looking for good combos that are working well.

Hey Dave
I run the 2221-8 with a 12 tooth and get 3200 HS, on a 13 tooth I'm a touch over 3600. Both are at 0 pitch. I'm running a CC pheonix 45 esc & flight power evo 25C batts.

Here is a direct quote from Bert Kammerer.

"The Align ESC is so far my #1 choice. I have flown this setup with the Scorpion 55A ESC, the Phoenix 45 and the Align ESC and prefer the Align ESC hands down. The power is the same with all three ESC's, but in my personal opinion, the Align BEC appears to have more consistent voltage as the tail on the machine feels very solid with it, more so than with any of the other ESC's.

A lot of people think that the Align controller can't handle the motor as it is rated at 35 amps, but I have logged over 50 flights with the Scorpion -6 motor and the Align ESC without any issues."

I guess the Align 35A esc should be just fine.

After seeing Bert's 450 and talking with him at Mulberry I went with 2221-6 motor. He was running it with 13t pinion (over 4k headspeed) and it was just too crazy.

I'm using a 11t pinion at thats the same headspeed as 13t on the xl motor from Align. I picked the 11t because I wanted more torque over higher headspeed and I didn't want very very short flight times.

My setup:

Trex 450 SE V2
Stock Align ESC
Scorpion 2221-6 with 11t pinion
JR 7703D gyro with futaba 9257 tail servo
CY Radix 325mm blades
Align CF tail blades

Using both FP EVO 25C 2170mah and FP Evolites 18C 2500mah.

I'm preferring the evolites due to the extra mah and flight time, power is about the same between both batts. I'm getting 4mins of flight time with the evolites as well. I've logged a flight with my eagletree and with the evolites it maxed out at 590 watts.

I've been very happy with this motor, it delivers crazy power and is cheap.

Thanks.

I have -6 on my Beam with 11t and Scropion 55A ESC. I did not measure the RPM but I gues something between 3100 to 3400. The power is crazy and I like it a lot.

Where did you get that quote from???
Seems almost impossible without overheating the ESC. The Align 35X supports 35A max amp continous, and with 45amp 15 sec current surge.
The Scorpion HK2221-8 alone is already rated at max continous of 45amp, so with the HK2221-6 it's already drawing 50+ amps.

Anybody want to chime in on this?

I've have already 30 flights with the stock Align 35x esc included with the v2 450. The ESC is not hot at the end of the flight and my eagletree shows peaks of 50 amps (unable to post as laptop is offline now). Like I posted above the I'm using the 11t pinion, and showing no problems so far.

Thanks.

tcast305,

When you get the data off the eagletree, I(others) would greatly appreciate it to see some graphs.

From the top of your head, can you remember what the average amp draw was for the motor? Peak amp draw and for how long?

Thanks

Align controllers can handle more than the advertised numbers. Even though not recommended, as I stated in another forum, I have been flying this motor with an 11 tooth pinion and the Align ESC for over 50 flights now without a single issue. There is a video somewhere in this forum of me flying this same setup.

Yea, the Align 35amp ESC can handle the Scorpion HK2221-6 motor. I was using this setup on my Mini-Titan with 10t at around 3100rpms tached. Though now I got a Scorpion 55amp ESC to be safe.

Here's a video of Jason Chow flying my old heavy Mini-Titan with the Align ESC on 10t and cheap Align Wood Blades. I was also using a SportBEC to not overheat the Align ESC. 11t would of made the flight super balistic as Bert K. flies his.

I've got the -6 with a 11T and Jazz 40-6-18 (still in the process of building)... was wondering if switching over to the -8 would give me longer flight times? If so, by how much? What about difference in power between the two? (looking to do mild 3D - nothing too crazy)

What are you -6 11T guys running for throttle curve/governor?

Also, is this motor too much for a Logictech 2100T & 3100G tail combo? I have a 401/9650 on the way, but never tried the Logictech...
