Dam!! I almost lost it, she was flying quite well, first gallon, small circuits and hovers.... suddenly a strange noise and no tail control, so lucky that I was just 2-ft above ground, so nothing happened!!

First inspection, the TAIL PITCH BALL LINKs broke, so the tail blades and the MACHINED INNER GEAR, very strange accident. I have the CNC tail blade holders and they are heavy.... possible? Any ideas why?

Regards,
Gustavo

T/R setup

Check the balance on the T/R assembly with blades then check the shaft for the tail rotor for trueness. Also the bearings in the tail housing could be crushed or have grit in them, The link should be firm but not bind - secure. And Check to see if there is a pin that holds the tail assembley in place, those usually creep from the centrifical forces.

Up, up and away!

I had something similar that striped my bevel gear like yours. I had bumped the tail rotor on a landing. When I took off again, lost tail authority (tail drive gear was skipping on the stripped bevel gear). Might not be your problem but something to consider if nothing else seem to be out of order. Mine is a gasser spectra G but looks like the same bevel gear.

I think about the hereafter. I go somewhere to get something, then wonder what I'm here after ?

I have the upgrade tail gear box, I don´t remember bumped the tail on a landing, those cnc grips were recommended by some guy in Heli-World, but I don´t see it in the Century Gasser upgrade page.... they are made for Hawk and Raven. It might be the problem??? They are very heavy in comparison with the plastic ones.

Best Regards,
Gustavo

Haggy:

It is fairly common for the mesh between the crown gear and tail bevel gear to be too tight on the Predator. If you run the heli with the mesh this way, it will tear up the crown gear (just like yours) in short order.

When you replace the crown gear, make sure to check the mesh with the bevel gear. Chances are, when you spin the rotorhead by hand it will feel "notchy", indicating overly-tight mesh. Check out this thread for more details:

Hi Excalibur:

The crown gears are perfect, they align quite well and they are not tight, no axial play neither. The problem is in another place that I would like to find. I just wondering if the tail pitch ball links are a little bit weak, did you know is the same part for Gassers, Hawks and ravens?

Gustavo

Possible when the link broke it binded the tail shaft & ate your crown? Had it happen to me once when my Limit on the Gyro was a little too much.
I didched the plastic links on mine. Used raptor links & Kasma tail. I did have to extend the tail shaft 5mm to work correctly, but as much HP my set up has,,,didn't want no stink'n Plastic on the Tail!

Did your slider seize up and break the links? I am not sure if you are saying the bevel gears broke or not, but once the links break the tail is going to be way off balance. There is no telling where the blade is going to go. If the gears broke first it is doubtful that would affect the links. What has me wondering is how did the crown gear survive if the miter gears saw that much force?

The disadvantage of open gearing is the possibility of kicking a piece of grit into the mesh which will lock them up. Except for tail strikes this is unlikely.

Bling is not always better and weight in the tail of a heli would not be an advantage in my book.

Bling on the tail is, Better,,, Stronger & an Advantage if your near 2000HS with a 13lb machine!!

But not nessasary if you just sport fly!!

The crown gears are as good as new, the only part that has failed was the ball links, the other ones are Ok, thats why I asked about the metal grips, they are quite heavy.

Ok, I was hovering and I heard some metal noise and then impact, I lower immediately the heli and checked the tail, were the sound came and noticed the ball links and the tail rotor break it.

Gustavo
