Just got a mini predator, but all it does is spin, like the gyro sense is the wrong way, but if I put if opposite tail it just spins that way, uncontrollably, I am thinking the Gyro could be faulty?

I have not yet by passed the gyro to try flying without, I guess that is the next step?

any thoughts anyone?

Hey Cliff,

I had an issue crop up last night on a students Mini Predator whereby the gyro/servo combination had appeared to reverse itself.
No problem I thought I'll just reverse it again and off we go, but that didn't work.

I then spied that the tail blades were on the wrong way around, in a recent rebuild of the tail I think fitting the new metal gearbox the tail blades were fitted reversed.
Looking at the model from the right hand side the tail blades should rotate anti-clockwise, with the leading edge of the tail blades going upwards into the downwash of the main rotors.

It may not be related to your problem but worth checking first before we go further.

Another idea is you haven't changed tail servo's/output arm orientation have you? If so this could be the problem.

Check to make sure the tail is working in the correct sense with the transmitters rudder stick, then once that is set check the gyro's control over the tail.
To do this I place a finger at the back, under & behind the tail control arm at the back of the model and input a yaw command. I think left yaw should move the arm towards your finger pinching it if I recall correct, if this is the case swing the nose of the model right which should pinch your finger as well.

Hi Ian

Every thing is as it should be, I think the gyro is duff, So I am( if it ever stops raining) going to take the gyro out of circuit and see what happens, it appears that it is not sensing properly, move the stick one way, let go and it keeps going that way, move the stick the other and it will keep going that way too.. its as if the gyro is sensing the wrong direction, but wrong in both ways..

I shall play a bit later in the week

thanks

Cliff

Hey Cliff,

It could be a duff unit mate, it's not impossible.

Dont forget the gyro is a heading hold unit and so most do send the tail servo over to one side dependant on stick input, until such time as the model then moves as it has been asked to.

Thanks Ian,

That's cool, but I was envisioning something else. Got all excited there for a minute.

Ok
Just popped out between rain showers, to try the pred, I by passed the gyro, but the same thing happens, the heli will go wild spinning in 1 direction, if I correct it, it will go wild the other way, it seems there is nothing in between end stop each way, although on the bench it moves fine.... very weird!

Servo, maybe? On the bench, put a load on the tail linkage and see how she responds to direction changes. Maybe the pot is whacked

Hey Cliff,

Mark has hit the nail on the head I think, a duff servo perhaps.
If you can swap it out and try again, with the gyro though if possible.
