Monitor tool is on my Christmas list. I do prints for customers and the last couple I have done have been large; 20x30 and 18x24. Both were ordered from internet print company and both were too dark to be acceptable.
The problem is mine as I don't calibrate my monitor and can't send my setup profile to the printer.

Can anyone recommend a quality tool or two to look at that they are familiar with?

Gretag macbeth Eyeone2 display calibrator is what I use. I think Xrite bought out Gretag macbeth though so now it is Xrite

Works pretty well.

Also if you can download your printers ICC profiles and soft proof in photoshop that should give you better control over your final prints.

I use ColorVision Spyder2Express. Cheap and does the job well
