Next month I plan on getting my first nitro heli. So far all I have flown really is just a X400. My JR XP662 has been great for this. Its light, simple, easy to adjust, and has great battery life. But I dont know if it will be enough for a nitro heli. Should I include money for a new radio in my budget for my new heli? I am thinking about going 2.4ghz right off the bat but I dont want to if my XP662 will do for now. I dont fly any 3D (yet) just basic stuff for now. Is a new radio worth getting?

The 662 will take you somewhere along the path, it's pretty limited in functionality, however with a only two flight modes (normal, idle up 1) and throttle hold. The pitch and throttle curves are only three-pointers, and limited mix available. It will do standard swash mix and 120 degree CCPM and you can control a gyro's sensitivity with it.

I flew my old Nexus helis with my 662 until I bought an 8103 about 5 years ago. Since then, the 662 has been relegated to my planks, and for use with a simulator.

Plan to budget some money for a new radio, if nothing else, a Spektrum DX6i as a minimum, perhpas a DX7 as middle ground, unless you want to go 9 or more channels. You'll regret having a nice heli and a near-boat anchor for a radio.

If you use a 662 and want to add a governor, you're out of luck as you'll use up all six channels with a standard heli and controllable gyro.

Hi

You didn't say what size or type of nitro heli you wanted or if you had the std size servos, bat and switch from your 662 set.

If you have only the 662 TX, Go price the 4 servos, Rx, Battery and switch that you will need for the nitro. It will be quite a high % of a complete DX7 radio set......

Regards
Paul

PS: the 821 servos that come with the dx7 are NOT suitable for a 50 size and up.....but would be fine on a 30.

Im planning on getting a 50 size heli so I guess I would need new servos. I dont really like the idea of having a $600 dollar heli in the air with a cheap FM link. I will probably get a DX6i or something along that lines. Thanks for the advice.
