For the last few months I have been reading reviews and looking to replace my old Sony trv-17. My head has been spinning trying to make the right decision. The HV20 HD had all the features I need/want, the reviews are great and was ready to purchase. I got to the store, picked it up and it just simply felt cheap! My stomach became sick thinking about spending 800 bucks on this plastic camcorder! I think even my trv-17 is built better.

Anyone here have the HV20 that could give me their honest opinion and how it is holding up?

Thanks....

I was in the same boat as you. I've got a friend with the HV20; he's had it for about 9 months and loves it. The video quality is great and his seems to have held up so far and he uses it pretty regularly. I couldn't get over the way it felt, however, so I ended up with the Sony HDR-SR7. The build quality was much better IMO. The video quality might not be as good as the HV20 (I can't really tell the difference). I don't think the AVCHD codec is difficult to work with and the convenience of recording to and transferring from a hard drive was worth any trade-off to me.

Great info...thanks.
That was another toss up as well. Hard drive or good old tape. I don't mind transferring via tape and typically the mini dv cameras are a bit cheaper in price. (for now)...

I second the HDR-SR7. Take a look at bhphoto they have a great price for a combo with a extended warranty.

You can find the SR5 for around $800, even in retail stores like Circuit City. Aside from the transfer speeds, I love being able to review footage on the camera and not have to cue the tape back up to begin recording again.

I am happy HV20 owner
Yes, you are right. It feels "cheap", but there is nothing cheap about the picture quality!
For me the picture quality comes first. I also bought an external mic and so the audio is also ok now.
I replaced my beautiful Canon XM2 with this cheap cam to get into to HD and I am so far very satisfied

I've got one too. It's a nice piece of plastic injection molding work. Not to mention that camera takes great video.

I bought mine at HH Gregg and paid right around $800.00 for it and I've not been disappointed. I originally was ready to buy a Sharp 3CCD Prosumer camera and the reviews were so bad on that buying the HV20 was a no brainer at that time.

I got a HV20 camera, and it is awesome. It takes High Def Video as good as Mark Ryder's $15,000 HD Camera, and only cost me $899.

Check out my gallery for some of my High Def Vids I have of heli's.
