Tonight a friend asking me to help with this, I am way out of practice. I keep screwing up in the same place, I can prove its wrong, but cannot find where it goes wrong. Any help?

I give up on Loctite, nothing lasts long enough to vibrate loose anymore.

I know its wrong a=b=1 means A and B are 1 but; Final solution is A+B=A but that means B=0.

I give up on Loctite, nothing lasts long enough to vibrate loose anymore.

ok the a squared on both sides cancells out... multiply both sides by negative making them both positive... -b on both sides and your left with ....b=a

edit...never mind....if you do this thing in reverse, it all works out...i have seen this before, but have never been able to figure it out...

(a-B)(a+b)= A^2- AB + AB - B^2 = A^2 - B^2

-AB+AB=0

Not quite smelling what you are stepping in, to which equation are you apply the squared and the -1

a^2 - b^2 = a^2 -ab
-b^2 = -ab
-b = -a
a=b

umm...thats not what i get...if you move everything over to one side, and make it = 0, you get this...

-b^2 + ab = 0

i solved it two different ways and got the same thing...

but i think its still messed up...

umm...thats not what i get...if you move everything over to one side, and make it = 0, you get this...

-b^2 + ab = 0
why are u moving everything over? keep the ab on the other side where it is a -ab... take -b from both sides and you are left with b=a

ah, bill, your right, i just didn't take mine far enough.

i just have the habbit of moving things over to one side....i soemtimes find its easier to visualize things.

the problem is your dividing by zero. If a=b then a-b=0. You cannot divide a real number by zero.

This is a classic! The trick is that dividing by zero is not mathematically defined. So, as we know a=b the second line states undefined = undefined. Everything else is just a distraction.

The problem with his equation is as Texas said. You can't have 0/0. At the first step he set the domain of a and b to 1. If this formula he set up were true for any number other than 1 than his algebra would have been correct. His second step is invalid with a and b having a domain of 1.

You'd have 0/0=0/0. Put 0/0 into a calculator and you get an error, it's undefined.

Well if a doesnt = b, (a=b) = a 1 does not = 2 2+1 doent = 2
