If you want the streets cleaned up, you need to be tough on crime. Hey, you don’t see graffiti in Singapore do you?
Hey TJ do you want to live in Singapore and if not, why not?

No, because it’s too bloody hot.

Countries like Malaysia and Singapore take punishment to the extreme. However, here in the U.S., we have become waaayyy too soft. We have to make prisons places that people do not want to spend time. It appears that a lot of criminals look at prison as a badge of honor. Don’t even get me started with the celebrity cases. If we want to be a nation of laws, then we must enforce those laws and truly punish those who break them. You read about guys who have three DUI’s and then kill someone on the forth. That’s insane. If we want to get rid of drugs in the inner city, then we must punish the dealers severely. At 25, this guy should have known better.

I disagree. I believe that we have so many people in prison because we are too soft on criminals. Death sentences should be carried out swiftly and prisons should not have more amenities than a college kid’s apartment. I’ve watched a number of documentaries debating punishment vs. treatment. I’m obviously of the mindset that if a punishment is severe enough, it will deter criminals.

If you’re missing my Singapore reference, I’m referring to Michael Fay. He got what he deserved. In addition, Singapore is one of the cleanest cities I’ve been to.

Yes but but is it fear of punishment or cultural norms that keeps it so clean?

Fear of punishment than morphed into cultural norms. Read up on Singapore’s history. Not too long ago it was a lawless land.

Grant,

I can't fathom that you would think 4 grams of coke doesn't deserve jail time in this specific case.

My thoughts:

1. It wasn't simple posession for himself and a friend. It was dealing, he got caught selling to a cop (surely this wasn't the first time he sold coke as the chick that set him up knew he sold).

2. To me, 4 grams of coke is enough for you and a friend to do some serious partying in one night. 4 grams is more like you and 2-3 friends unless you really are going to pound out some monster rails.

3. It's coke!! Not weed. I'm all for getting some help to those that need it but this guy asked for it obviously. Selling to someone he didn't know, classic sting operation. Smart/safe dealer isn't going to pull some stupid stunt like this because 200 bucks is chump change and not worth the risk. A lesson I think this individual will learn now, if he learns nothing else.

Sure our jails are overcrowded, but I bet you would feel a bit differently when/if you have a daughter/son and you find out some dirtball is hooking her up with 8-balls. I should think this would ring even more true to those individuals who have had the chance to do a little "snow-skiing"

With a lawyer he shouldn't do any time at all. Unless he has lots of priors. I live in florida so coke's kinda everywhere so 4 grams is hardly enough for the cops to do paperwork down here. Just tell him to get a lawyer and plea down to house arrest or prob.

and for all those who are not informed heres how drugs rate on a 1-10 for scale for power, and addiction.

Meth 10
Heroin 9
Crack 8
Coke 5
pain killers 5
LSD/Extacy 4 *non addictive
Alchohol 3
Weed 1 *non addictive

By non addictive I mean you won't get physically sick when you quit.

That list seems subjective to me though I do agree with you on alot of it. Coke is pretty damn addictive its just usually too damn expensive to play with for too long unless you have unlimited funding. May not be so bad to the point where you can't get off it like heroin/meth but while you are on it I have to say it is definitely higher than a 5. That's why a bag of grass can last a while, a bag of coke can last a night. It usually doesn't matter if you have a gram or 5 grams, you just adjust how often you do it and it still lasts a night. Your numbers 1 and 10 are definitely right IMO

x around here is just like another form of speed.

Xanax (alprazolam) and Valium are big out here in the country, I know a couple guys that are gobbling down 2-3 or more bars a day like it wasn't anything. At 5 bucks a pop thats just retarded. Then they wonder why they have nothing and live with their parents at 27 while I have a house, a truck (almost paid off woohoo), and too many hobbies.

A good lawyer should be able to plea that down if not make it disappear altogether, sentences and judgements are decided on the golf course and not in the courtroom. Sad but true...

Drugs are bad mmmkay...lol

I say coke is only a 5 because its so much weaker then crack meth or smack. If you think coke should be an 8or9 then meth and smack would be about a 73 and 79. Coke is acutally weaker than weed but much more addictive, and this is where the danger comes in.

Coke never last because of the ladies. Woman love blow! period. I had a friend that was a sheriff that always kept an oz of blow at the house just for woman. It works too.

This is kind of thinking that is ruining our country. Why the hell should I have to pay for some drug addicts treatment? Drug use is a choice and forcing other people to deal with someone else's bad decision does NOT help the addict. They just keep going through the system, over and over and over. What they need is to learn to take care of themselves and be responsible for the decisions they made.

If they can afford a $100.00 a day drug habit then they sure as hell can afford treatment and the treatment options ARE available.

Overcrowded prisons?
Well I know new establishments cost a lot of money, but at least the USA has huge tracts of land on which to build them! Isn't there a bombing range or two out of Nellis?
