I'm just trying to get my head around this. I don't have any experience with drugs other than a little weed I smoked in college.
This new kid (25 going on 16) at work got busted selling 4 grams of cocaine to an under cover cop about 3 months ago. Apparently a girl he sold to got busted and help set him up. He called out of work and was crying on the phone. This is about his 5th court date and he says he's looking at 1 1/2 years in a rehab/boot camp thing, and 2 years in state prison, which he will be out in 6 months.
Now, I tried to tell him it's not the end of the world to make him feel better, but I know he's screwed. He did the crime, but the time seems a little much. Maybe because of the investigation? This is in NY by the way. Any chance of him getting off light? He's from a good family and has no other offences. Any input?

Lungs transformed to take in water.

This is about his 5th court date
If this is his first offence, that's a little steep.
The real crime is that after 80+ years of prohibition, we haven't figured out it doesn't work, not likely. It seems to me that a lot of people in positions of influence/power don't want a strategy change.

If it's his first offense he may get off with a ton of community service and probation. Sometimes it takes something like that in a persons life to make them take a look in the mirror and get their life together. If it's his 5th court date then it's probably not looking to great for him, seems like they're really going after it. What looks really bad for him is the fact that he's 25. By 25 you're supposed to be way past all that crap. During high school kids experiment and make stupid mistakes. By 25 you're an adult, dealing drugs is the last thing you should be doing. Whether he spends time in jail or not hopefully it will scare him straight.

I have to agree with others here he is getting to lite of a sentance. I have no use for anyone who uses or sells drugs and wish they would hang them out to dry instead of slapping thier hands.

People will find other ways of escape regardless. Drugs are not the problem. People are and their inability to control themselfs (expecially with substances).

Alcohol and cigarettes are the worst drugs in my book.

By 25 you're an adult
Thats the problem - nowadays this isn't always true more often than not most 25 year olds are about the mental age of 16... Hell I'm 28 and I still act like a 16 year old all the time!

Selling drugs is bad ju-ju period. Sounds like this kid needs a little bit of a smack.

This hobby is like Kryptonite to chicks!

How's that war on drugs working for you americans? (As Dr. Phil would say) Prohibition is making scumbags rich, costing you a fortune, and giving the US the world record for incarceration rate. Congratulations on your world record, not an easy task.
The abused child living on the streets using drugs to numb their pain so deserves life in prison.

Manditory Miniums

in the states we have to be fair to each crook. so if guy 1 get caught with 1gr or more of pot he can spend a max of 2yrs but a min of 6month probation. but with pot it is a schedule 2 narcodic with coke it schedule 1 narcodic and even the littlest amount is same as under 1 oz and carries a max 5yrs min1.5 yrs. First offense may be a little lighter with 5yrs probation. But lately courts and jails have been over run with cases so drug courts are poping up and sentencing guildlines are are not taking presidence any more. so now there leting you get off easy with rehabs and boot camps. I dont think for a first offense he will be looking at both 1.5 at rehab and 2yr too. I see 2 ways, 1 boot camp or jail and probation/parole. 4 gr of coke in ny is still a misdeminor but intent to sell is a felony. Which can carry 0-5yrs, so if this is his 5th hearing I am sure the procusitor is pushing for jail and the lawyer is going through the motions trying to perswade the ada or da to drop the felony to misdeminor and serve probation, but then the guidle line are there too so who knows, Hope he learns this time that selling drugs doesnt pay.

and spog according to this story below its coming from canada. I guess drug addicts are ok compared to the growers there are the main dealer SCUM.

have you ever seen 4 grams of Cocaine??? Thats a pretty sizeable amount. Sure its no kilo but its enough for a good day or two of partying.

I think the sentence is about right if you really think about it. This guy didn't get popped joyriding and snorting some coke (personal possession) he got nailed trying to sell it to a cop. The girl he sold to got busted and cut a deal. So, they obviously know he's distributing.

It's bad enough to ruin your own life with that crap, helping others do the same is just wrong. If it was a little smoke I would think a bit differently about the situation but when your dealing with cocaine i'd say not. Anyone who has ever put that up their nose and sobered up after the bag was empty knows that coke is a **** drug, hopefully he learns his lesson and quits playing with that garbage.

A friend of mines is currently teaching in Malaysia. When she was researching the move, all of the literature made it very clear that there is a mandatory death sentence for drug offences. Guess what…they don’t have a drug problem in Malaysia.

If you want the streets cleaned up, you need to be tough on crime. Hey, you don’t see graffiti in Singapore do you?

4 grams is .5 gr over an 8ball or 1/8 oz. a kilo is 100 oz. yes it is still pretty sizeable. but if you know a coker coke usually never lasts longer then 1 night never makes it to 2 nights. maybe a long night and the follwing morning.

I know all about the all nighters, takes someone pretty strong in the will department to actually put some of what was bought away for the next day. Your not going to sleep anyway and the "mores" will get the better of you anyway.

Then you just spend the next day sleeping and feeling like a pile of vomit after which you cannot \ breathe out of your nose for two - three days because you have basically destroyed your sinuses. Add in a few nose bleeds and there you go, sounds like a recipe for fun!

Like the quote says...buy the ticket, take the ride.
