Hi Guys,

I have a fury tempest that that i rebuilt recently. I'm having some tail vib's but the fan is dieled in below 001. But i still have vib's. One thing that i change since the rebuild is the muffler. I change to the mp5 from the sb 16 on a ys91 and i have notice the i can feel the tail boom vibrating when the heli is idling making me think the engine crank shaft is bent. Anyone hade this problem before.

Thanks
Terry

Tail Vibe

Terry,

You indicate that the tail boom is vibrating at idle. Do you mean that the tail is "kicking"? Does it smooth out/stop when you pick the model up into a hover? Did you retune the motor after you changed mufflers. Going from an SB16 to an MP5 is a significant change with respect to how the motor will respond. If the tail is "kicking" it is quite possibly a rich engine that is causing the kick. Lean the motor out a couple of clicks at the time and see if the vibration gets better. Or, if it is lean you can richen it up a couple of clicks at the time and see if you get improvement.

If you mean the t/r is vibrating, then that is probably a different matter. You don't say why you rebuilt the Tempest. However, if it was due to a crash, I'd take a close look at the entire t/r assembly. Even an auto with a hard landing has been known to tweak the t/r output shaft and/or t/r hub. And, a tweak is all it takes at the speed the t/r is turning.

Hi Dave,

Yes. The damaged was done during a crash. But i replced the tail output shaft and the rotor hub. I also noticed a crack in the fan and replaced it. I guess what have me confused is when the heli is idling it seem that you can feel the vibration in the tail boom and hear the tail rotor torque tube buzzing. I have tried to richen and lean the fuel flow but can not get the vibration to stop.

Thanks
Terry

If you feel the vibe at idle, then i would assume it's an engine problem. You might want to check the engine shaft, and fan to clutch aligenment.

Just do it.

For what its worth, I've got a Fury that does the same thing. The fan is balanced and indicated properly, and the mixture is dialed in. Its never been crashed. I have over 26 gallons of fuel through it, and except for the tail rotor push rod "buzzing" at idle, I've experienced no other indications of a vibration problem with the machine. Everything runs smooth once the motor come off idle. I gave-up looking for an answer eventually, and wrote it off as some strange "resonance" at idle RPM. I'd love to figure it out, but now just ignore it and go fly. At least you're not alone.
