I shot this video a few days ago at the field. Is this a gyrocopter or is something else? The blades are fixed pitch and unpowered. Elevator, rudder, and throttle is all that it has.

It is an autogyro...

there have been many multirotor designs.
Elevator, rudder, and throttle is all that it has.
Thats all it needs. In a very light wind, you can practically fly the think like a hovering heli with just those three controls.

some of the more advanced concepts use the rotor for control by tilting the axis of rotation, ie, tilting the main mast for thrust vectoring type control although the rotor is creating no thrust.

the a/c flies similar to your heli when you are autorotating. the blades use airflow through the disk to create lift.

The model in the video seemed prone to spin. It actually spun and recovered earlier in the flight, but then spun again and didn't recover which is at the end of the video.

I know what an autogyro is, i just didn't know if this particular model had a different name because it looked so unusual.

nah, not any different. It just uses two rotors instead of one.

I wonder if the spins were caused by different rotor rpms in flight?

there are a few guys at my field who have twin rotor autogyros and the mast/spindle system is always prone to malfuntion.

Both times it seemed to happen after it was givin down elevator. There's gotta be some interesting aerodynamics going on there!

I know that on some model autogyro's atleast a few home designs at our field, the rotors are actually at a slightly positive pitch but the pitch combined with the AoA of the rotor disk combine to give a net negative pitch or something to that effect.

I wonder if the rotor disks are behaving strangely when given a nose down moment after down elevator is applied?

i bet some guys in the autogyro forum could answer this one quickly...

time for some cross posting?
