My Crankshaft that is, this is the first time I have had a engine fail quite like this. My trusty YS 50ST has been making gobs of power in my 600N, having been through about 8 or 9 gallons of trouble free 3D flying.

All of the sudden the engine quit and forced an auto without incident. I thought maybe I burned the glow plug or perhaps ran it too lean, although it wasnt showing any signs of being lean.

I took the motor apart and I could not believe it, everything is very clean, no signs of a lean issue, piston/ring/liner are pefect, bearings are fine. But the Crankshaft is broke in half forward of the rear bearing, with no other damage.

Got another one on the way from YSpartsandservice.

My buddy broke his YS50 a couple weeks ago. The wrist pin webbing broke off the crank.

Hope they take care of you on the warranty.

To tell you the truth, I did'nt even try to get it covered under warranty, although I probably could if I yelled loud enough.

you dont even have to yell. If its new and the crank broke, they will fix it. Simple as sending it in.

Thats why, I dont want to wait while I send it in, it goes in my favorite heli. If all I got to do is replace a crank after 70-80 hard flights, I'm happy. At least it lasted longer than the bearings in my OS 50 Hypers.

By the way, not to change the subject but the guy at ysparts (wholesaler for YS in the US) told me they just sent out a bunch of YS 50's to all the retailers last week.

So go buy a new one and send the broken one in to be fixed. Then you have 2 engines. And since you will have a spare engine, you might as well get a new heli to put it in... Does it ever end??

No, you got to be kidding me!!

If you have flown heli's for awhile, then you would know how much a crank costs and if thats all that has broken in 70-80 flights, you would consider yourself lucky. It dont take deep pockets to know that.

Bunch of smart a### in on this site anymore.

Well, I don't think I'm being a smart a$$...

You're taking this with a great attitude and no doubt the YS seems like a good product for power and operability. But several reports here of crank shafts breaking (in different locations to boot), seems like there is a design or material defect. YS should be looking into this. I'd say a crank should wear out before it breaks from use. The YS is not a cheap throw away engine.

Yeah, heli's flying 3D flights put a lot of stress on these motors, but that's exactly what they are designed to handle. Doesn't it seem resonable to expect many seasons' service out of these engines without critical failures in flight?

Never, ever, ever, ever give up.

I didnt know that others have had crankshaft failure, is that true? I thought mine was an unusual case.

Who's the smartass now ?? Welcome to the club.....

And if you're "happy" (as you say) about "just having one" major engine failure with just 70-80 flights, not only are you a smartass but a dumbass as well !! That motor is just barely broken in.......

I've been flying helis long enough to know that breaking a crankshaft is not normal. Maybe you don't have as much experience.

And seeing that the motor is relatively "new" to the market, so to speak, I was curious as to the price of the crankshaft. If I knew what it was, I would not have asked.....

Instead, I get the smartass answer.....You started the personal attack...... I hope you're man enough to take it back as well. You surely earned it.....

that could have been over tightening of the hub assembly. May not have been a failure. Mine is fine and there are some failures. and not 1 trex has had that problem more lean runs and piston and ring. and couple of conn rod failures.

I'm thinking people are running high head speeds without enough load causing crank issues from motor over revving just thoughts

i think it's from overtightening the nut it doesn't have to be extremely tight, locktite will keep it from coming loose. i have one thats 2 years old- and been in 3 d-ifferent helicopters.

hmmmmmmmmm so how do you explain mine fracturing just in front of the rear bearing while it was being started?
Please remember it was spinning NOT locked up and went with a bang so I know exactly when the fracture occured.

It was fitted to a TREX 600 and IMO the crank nut was not too tight (no need with the 600 hub to tighten much anyway)

It had NOT been run lean at any point was probably not yet fully run in and other wise looked clean and new.

also although I hadn't tached the HS speed as the engine was not yet fully run in it was certainly not particularly high
