How can you tell when you have the mixture correct on the OS 50 Hyper? I'm used to airplanes where you can pinch the fuel line, hold the nose up, etc. Heli's don't work that way.

I have 1 gallon through mine and I started with the mixture 1-5/8 turns open, now at 1-1/2 turns. I'm sure I need to lean it, but don't want to damage it by going too lean.

You can still do the pinch test for idle mixture.

You can feel the back plate temp for hovering mixture, if you can't hold your finger on it comfortably (too hot) then it's lean.

You can do a climb out test, full power, it should climb out strongly with plenty of smoke.

Hello, which muffler are you using with OS 50 HYPER ? I use MP5 now, and I have main neddle about 1 turn (CPh 15).With old MP 50 L/R, I had around 1,5 turn. All my friends had to tight main neddle with new MP 5.

I have the Align muffler. I've heard 1.25 turns is about where it should end up.

Unfortunately I don´t know Align muffler.I think, it is equvivalent Hatori mufflers. And how much nitro you are using? It is important factor, fuels with hi nitro content (CPh 30%) enormous smoke even if motor is setting on the lean side !

http://www.raptortechnique.com has two articles, one for beginner engine tuning and one for advanced that apply to any helicopter.

Be careful about using someone else's needle settings as "gospel".... too many variables involved. For example, you may be at sea level whereas someone else might be at 4000 ft of elevation......

Best advise is to follow Barracuda's link..... and tune your motor to YOUR operating parameters....
