I am a total newbie to video. I just bought a HV 20, and the machine seem to be able to shoot with normal DVC and HD DVC cassettes. What type do you guys use? Normal, or HD. I am thinking using regular DVC for practice and tunning and HD type when doing for a job and promo videos. Is this approach correct?

Also, for practice, I can record the same DVC over and over, right?

The only thing I can advise is stick to a particular brand. By that I mean if you start using Sony tapes, use them from now on, the problems Ive heard of is when guys use different brands. I use Maxell Mini DV tapes, I buy them six at a time, havent changed brands (much) Sometimes the situation arrives where all someone has is another brand. If you stick to a brand you should be okay. Its weird, I know.

I have used Sony DVM63 MiniDV casettes (Full HD 1080) in a HV20 and they worked quite well. I haven't used any others as a comparison though.

To elaborate a bit more on what Mike posted... about sticking to one brand of tape....

The reason for this is that some manufacturers use a dry, powdered lubricant on their tape... and some use a "wet" lubricant. Either one will work fine with the heads in your camera, deck, etc. But if you switch back and forth... it's just like mixing water and dirt. You get MUD... that gums up everything.

My recommendation is to use Panasonic AY-DVM63AMQ (Advanced Master) tapes. Yes.. they're a bit more expensive... about $6.00 each. But is having problems with head clogging, and drop-outs on your video worth saving a couple of bucks on tape? I don't think so.....

Do a Google search for that style number, and you'll find an on-line discounter that will sell you boxes of 10 tapes for a reasonable price...
