Guys, I'll post some more pics tomorrow AM sometime. Thanks for the words. It really isn't me who you should be thankful to though, its the people who have been there 2 or 3 or 4 times and those who are still there...

Great sequence, Pru. Looking forward to more. Incidentally, that's the 2nd set of pics of that c130 I've seen. Apparently you're not the only one with a camera handy, eh?

HA, I can claim that I was there the night that it happened. I have driven across that runway more than once.

Its a shortcut to the base chow hall

I can't for the life of me remember what the name of that FOB was.
We were ordered to move there from FOB speicher right before we handed our equipment over to the unit replacing us. It sucked for them cause FOB speicher was fully developed (for a war zone) with burger king, subway, pizzahut and baskin robbins as well as a fully stocked PX to rival any CONUS PX. The new base was not developed but was well on its way as the 13th COSCOM was moving there too. They were pretty much the regional support guys responsible for all logistics and supply operations while I was there.

It was south east of Mosul, something tells me that it's name was FOB Freedom? Not sure though. I'll have to take a look at global security.org to jog my memory.

EDIT: It's called FOB Endurance, atleast it was when I was there:

If you go to google earth and type in tikrit, you can follow the main north-south highway a little north of tikrit. There, you'll find a faint square outline in the sand to the west of the north-south highway (Tampa). Thats FOB Speicher.

Sand Storm

These pics were taken by members of the 553rd CSB (combat support Battalion) after the invasion and after they had occupied FOB Speicher (known as Camp Speicher at that time). This was in the middle of the day. I saw 3 or 4 of these and they blow in real quick. Sand gets everywhere and covers everything!

that, my friend, depends solely on how long you have been there away from the truly "hot chicks" in the US

There are pictures of my time in Mosul (May 2003 to April 2004) in my gallery. Some of you might have seen them already as they appear on the top right of the RR pages every now and then.

Rafael, nice pics. Are you still in the service?

I spent about 2 months give or take in Mosul Supporting a Transportation company up there with my Mobile team. It sure was fun up there, what with all the mortars.

Our "area" was in the conex sleeping units south of the Gym Tent and chow hall. My particular unit had shrapnel holes in the walls from mortars that had hit the adjacent parking lot

I never did sleep too soundly there.

Dakine, it's amazing what you can find attractive after so long in the desert...

Thanks for posting the pics I really enjoyed them. I hadn't seen many first hand pictures. Was it what you were expecting when you first got over there? Were you actually in any real combat or was it like people are saying (walking around just waiting to get shot at)? I just wonder whats really going on over there because I 100% doubt its anything like what the media says. All we ever hear about is our friends getting blown up by car bombs.

I was in a maintenance company so we didnt go out looking for trouble. We basically drove around picking up wrecks or providing security and just waited for trouble to find us.

To be honest, I had no clue what to expect. I left my mind open to anything.

Intersting story...

FOB Speicher has (or had, I dont know now) a test fire pit where you could test fire your Crew Served weapons like the .50, M-240 and M-249 to be absolutely sure they were operational before heading out the gate to MSR Tampa. Speicher was the only FOb with something like this to my knowledge and it gave convoys a nice warm feel good feeling. I distinctly remember the first morning on FOB Speicher. I didn't know about this pit and the first time I woke up to machine gun fire at 0500 and I freaked out a bit haha. The .50's and avengers with their solenoid controlled .50's made quite the racket even from a half mile away!

What I can tell you and I'm sure other Vets can attest to this, what the media reports and what happens there are two vastly different stories...

Yeah I'm sure waking up to a .50 going off could be a little disturbing I already know several people indirectly that didn't come home but I also know allot of the ones that did are re-enlisting. By the way is that 1 picture of the heli an Apache?

Yeah, on that particular convoy, we had two of them following us from FOB Speicher to just a little north of Bayji as that city was the wild west. Infact, during our convoying days, they detoured us around the city through another FOB west of the city because the place was so dangerous. The roads were lined with tall buildings and alleyways. Insurgents were known to drive out of an alley in with a VBIED and drive right into a truck in a convoy. The tank I have above was damaged in that city as well. It felt good knowing they were watching over us.

I have a video while riding shotgun in our lead gun truck of a wrecked truck that had been blown up just previously, about a half an hour before we went through there. One of our other mobile teams was recovering the wreck while M-1's and Bradleys looked over them.

It was like the wild west within the wild west.

Its on a digital tape, I'll see if I can get it onto my computer this weekend time/4month old son permitting

It's nothing special. Basically a tape of me in the humvee talking about having to take a mad piss and then, upon seeing the truck all blowed up, saying "holly schnoykies"! and then quickly panning and capturing a glimpse of it as we passed...

I'll see about gettting it uploaded.
