Get to reading...

http://www.phoenix-sim.com/features.htm

I like it better because it feels more like a simulator than a game. To me Phoenix is like Microsoft Flight Sim X versus say Microsoft FS2002. You know what I mean?

Ok, if you say so.
So how is "sticking with 3.5" new in your mind?

I have both 3.5 and 4 and the difference is neglible in my mind given the fact that Big Pockets has 3.5 already. I also have Reflex which I like a lot but use infrequently as I travel and carrying the RFG3.5 box is handy.

Phoenix is new but given that my neighbor has one and I've tried it, the jury is still out on that one and to be honest, it's going to have to do a lot better job than what it does now.

G4 takes a lot of computer hardware and if you are not ready for that requirement you will be disappointed in the programs performance. Unfortunately since this is KE's newest platform all of their support is going to go to G4 rendering support for 3.5 null and void which may be a reason to upgrade but since G3.5 is still working it's not like it's a totally outmoded program.

So with that in mind, what should he buy Bill?

I've been using phoenix since last Christmas and used FMS before that. I've used the 3.5 they have in Hobbytown here and spent a little time tweaking and tuning and its a very capable sim. I love the way Phoenix deals with their customers by making them buy the product once and as they upgrade, they make it downloadable. The resources Phoenix uses is minimal compared to most , and can be ran well on just about any modern machine. If someone was brand new, had no tx , and was looking, I would first say consider getting a DX7 and Phoenix. If they were dead set against getting a Tx but still wanted a sim, I'd recommend 3.5. Reflex is good ,from what I understand but doesnt have online capability. Borrow your neighbors copy for a week (if he'll let ya)and see if it was how he had it set-up or something. Its still a sim, but that dang thing has given me the confidence to do ALOT of stuff IRL I dreamed about last winter.

Bill, don't get me wrong, I could make Phoenix work. I've got a copy of Tru Flite that flies as good as anything that I'm currently flying and it uses a fraction of what G3.5 and G4 use in terms of hardware but it looks just slightly better than CSM which I still have. If hardware were the issue I could still make the Skylark work but that would be stretching things just a bit.

My point is much the same as yours, if you already have something that works like G3.5, unless you have a new highend computer G4 isn't really going to work for you.

I think that sims in general are good learning tools for sure.

Which sim... I have 3.5, reflex and phoenix. Since you have 3.5 and you have big pockets (is that the same as deep pockets?)... if so, then get phoenix. Having said all that, someone may flame me, but your 3.5 maybe all that you really need. I do not know anything about GP4.0 other than what I have read here. My reflex is the one with the blue dongle, not red, so I don't know what their latest bits are like... A heli guy at my field suggested I get Pheonix for helis, which I did last winter. I fly a trex v2 and planks, the v2 is baked into pheonix and flys good... you can download a v2 from kniefedge's site for 3.5 or 4 and it flies good and looks better than the phoenix one. For planks, I prefer GP3.5. Bottom line, if you spend a lot of time on your sim, buy the phoenix... you can always sell the one you don't like. Otherwise put the money towards something else. My 2 cents.

Big pockets,
im looking to get a new sim
Definitely look into PhoenixRC as an option.

I would recommend downloading their demo, can't fly it but it will give you an idea as to the graphics.
I've owned a few RC simulators starting back with Ambrosia "Aerochopper", had Dave Brown Flight Sim, yep they helped me solo my first plank.

Then came RealFlight, wow... still have my G2 and after upgrading to G3 then G3.5 it was still pretty cool….. But ended up buying AeroFly Pro (AFPD) which was highly recommended for 3D plank flying plus I own an ECO8 and wanted the simulated heli.

So, I traded off my G3.5 and do fly my G2, Clearview and AeroFly Pro. Not owned FSOne, ReFlex or G4 so, I can not comment nor compare however; since buying PhoenixRC, I rate it #1. Really is a nice simulator that compliments many computers setups without sacrificing all your resources to run it.

For me, PhoenixRC has been the best simulator experience to date, has put me the closest to the real thing and exceeded my expectations.

Ok heres the bottom line for ya...

I owned G3.5 for a year, and I currently own BOTH G4 and Phoenix.

My G4 controller sits in the corner of my room, with the cord wrapped up, collecting dust. I fly Phoenix, every day.

I have no desire to use G4 now that I have Phoenix. It's just way better. In fact I will probably sell my copy of G4.

I also have G3.5, G4 and Phoenix. Phoenix is very good but I don't think it is worth getting if you already have G3.5. I would be a lot better if they provided a TX like Real Flight does. In my opinion, G4 is really no better than G3.5 but you will probably need it in the future when they come out with additional upgrades.

The other reason I don't use Phoenix that often is that I put my TX in a case and it's a pain the as^ to get it out everytime I use the sim. Plus if you have kids like I do, I don't like them messing with my real TX.

In my opinion, all of the sims out these days are pretty good.
