For those of you using high voltage A123 packs, what ESC do you use? What would be equivalent to 10S lipos? Will an upgraded TP 1010C charge that many cells and how long? Finally, what kind of flight times?

I would like to try A123 cells on my Ion X that is currently on 10S. Would A123's fit?

Can a 1010C charge one of these and can a CC85HV handle it?

I ran 15s A123 on a CC85HV with no problems. I know it is only rated for 50V. 15s is 54V fully charged. As soon as you spool it up, it goes below 50V.
On the 1010c, if you use the A123 setting you can only charge 10s. It takes a 12s A123 pack to equal a 10s LiPO. You can charge 12s A123 on the 1010c in 10s LiPO mode on the charger but it will only get each cell up to 3.5V. It will not hurt anything and you will not be able to tell the voltage difference. 0.1V per cell is not enough to worry about.

Thanks for the input.

The most I will be charging on the 1010C is 7 cells because I plan on running two 7S packs (14S). Based on your information, I assume that if a CC85HV can handle 15S, it SHOULD be able to handle 14S. Also, if 12S A123 equals 10S lipos, is it safe to assume that 14S A123's is more than adequate? To save weight, I may go with 12S A123's. I compared the 7S A123 to the 5S TPX 4600's and it looked like the TPX was heavier. Does that sound right?

<= 15s then CC85HV
> 15s then PowerJazz.

Depends on your type of flying for 3D fligh, replacing 10s1p 3700 lipo, I needed 15s A123 to get same performance, slightly different gearing needed though.

I didn't consider that. I was hoping to be able to use either 10S lipos or 14S A123's (7S x2) with no other change. You mentioned 15S needs different gearing...do you think 14S would? I'm willing to sacrifice some performance for the sake of not having to change gears.

14s should replace 10s in terms of headspeed, you need to lower the throttel % quite alot though since initial voltage on A123 is quite high.

Runtime will be a bit shorter though.

14S A123 is the same voltage as 12S Lipo. I'm building 7S2P A123 packs and charge them as 6S Lipos.

Charge voltage yes, usage voltage no.

This makes sense because they have some outrageous C rating like 60C or something crazy like that.

So, what should I charge a 7S A123 as? I would like to put a pair of 7S A123'a in my IonX assuming they fit.

Upgrade you TP1010C and it will charge them for you.

I upgraded my 1010C and now A123 is a battery option. I'm thinking of getting four 7S A123 packs so I'll have two complete sets (approx $500). This combined with my current 10S 4900 should allow me to fly all day. I may need another 1010C though.

Is it a bad idea to run a CC85HV at 85% while running 14S A123's then run 95%-100% while on 10S lipos?

I ran my CC85HV at 60%-65%... (to get the overhead/less bogging as I wanted)

But if you used to 95-100 (quite alot bogging), 85% would be ok.
