T-REX 450 › Why should you not use HS-65MG instead of HS-65HB?

Hi guys,

I am flying with the HS-65HB's for a while now and they work great. But since I bought three new ones I have some problems.

Anyway... there seems to be some speculation about the HS-65MG's in helicopter (T-Rex 450). Some say you should use HS-65HB's instead, ofcourse with the cost of stripping geards. They say they are somewhat more sloppy and they wear quicker, because of the metal gears. I don't know if that is true thought. Some people seem to fly with them without problems so far.

Are they any reasons why you should not use the metal gears??? Let's say for 3D flying?

Please let me know...

I've used the HS-65MG for 100 flights with no problems at all. I don't do hard 3D yet, just loops, rolls and flips, but one of our local flyers who is the manager at the LHS flies like a maniac and uses them.

The Metal Gears don't really get sloppy on these little birds, there just aren't the loads to wear them quickly.

The MG will save you a bunch of gear sets. If you run the metal head as on the SE it is pretty much indestructible, you'll bend spindles and mainshafts as it should be... but rarely anything else in the head in a crash.

There is no downside at all to 65MG's in this size bird only benefits. Probably in excess of 300 flights on mine and still no gear lash.

I don't think there is any down side to using the MGs. They save you money in replacement gears. Trust me, if you think you'll save money with the HBs, you're wrong. It just takes 1 gear replacement and you've just paid for an MG. Plus it is quite a pain to replace/repair the aileron servos on the 450.

That must have been a very hard crash. I've broken so many other parts but not those MGs. Even the linkage rods have been bent tremendously but the MGs were good to go. Sorry about the crash.

Replacing the gears isn't too bad, but reinstalling those little servo nuts inside the frame frustrates me every time.

Funny how after this discussion wbplomp stripped the metal gears. Sorry it happened.

How bad was the crash?

WPB, When you stuff your bird you can order metal gears to go! I burnt up motors in 3 MGs, bought HBs and put the MG gears and tops on the HB bottoms saved 30 bucks!

Left Thumbs, I suffer the same delima, what I wound up doing was stick the screw on the hex driver and screw in from the inside and put 2mm nutz on the outside! Saves a lot of headache...

Good idea on reversing the screws. I may tear into mine tonight, and give it a try.

I have found that if you get a glue stick (looks like chap stick) and apply a little to the plastic servo nuts, they stay in place long enough to screw the servo in. Hope this helps. I haven't stripped metal gears in over a year (knock on wood!!!!)

Yes, the crash was very hard! (95% throttle) The grass and wied totally wound op in the rotorhead, it looked a big plant to me. I had a lot of damage. My brand new lipo was also totally bend, a bit dangerous. But I have already repaired everything, except for the servo gears because I do not have them in stock

I'm not sure, but it looks like the second servo is also missing some a gear teeth, but I'm not sure yet.
