Two airplanes collided Friday at the Reno National Championship Air Races, killing one pilot and injuring another in the third fatal crash there in the past four days.

Gary Hubler, 51, Caldwell, Idaho, was killed in the crash shortly after 9:30 a.m. at the Stead Airport just north of Reno.

It marked the 18th fatality in the 44-year history of the air races and prompted the suspension of the competition the rest of Friday.

The pilot of the other plane involved in the crash was identified as
Jason Somes of Simi Valley, Calif. He was taken to Renown Regional Medical Center where his condition was not immediately known, (inside info from Horizon is there is he has an injured eye) race officials said.

Two judges on the ground also were injured but there was no immediate word on their condition, the Reno Gazette-Journal reported on its Web site. One refused medical treatment.

Jason should consider himself one lucky ass dude... don't know if I would continue that "hobby"

Prayers go out to you man.. but the al mighty must already be looking out for you.. not many people walk away from mid airs.

I am assuming this was taped.. so some day we should be able to see the accident.

Again... get well Jason

more info...

It looks like when the plane stuck his it knocked the canopy off which struck him in the head...this is how he received head and eye injuries..

He got the plane down but colpased the landing gear..

keeps sounding more and more like he had a horse shoe with him.

By the time you read this Jason you will be well on the way to recovery.. but me Jeff Anderson and the Horizon Crew are thinking about you and wish you well.

Not a good month for aviation...but thats the risk they take. I feel for the families.

This is the first year in the last five that we chose not to make the trek north to spectate. I'm relieved we missed seeing these mishaps. Sad stories indeed.

Condolences to those families who's members of the flying community have fallen this year in Reno and elsewhere, doing what they surely loved best.
