I am having a bit of trouble with the tail pitch on a plastic XL tail. When I get the tail to stay in one spot in rate mode there is only about 2-3mm of slider left before it hits the tail blade hub. This causes binding in only one direction(right). The other direction seems to be ok. I have all the correct settings in my radio, and I understand how to set the gyro. This appears to be an issue with the design. If the ball link arms were about 2mm longer it looks like the problem would be solved.

Anybody have any insight on this issue?

With the xl it is best just to center the slider on the tail shaft and only use HH. You can also file a flat spot on the end of the tail shaft and cheat the tail hub out a few mm. This helps some.

ckoelliker,

Thanks for your info. I did move the hub out, but then you have to reset your rate servo position. I do only fly in HH, but I was just trying to set the tail the way its supposed to be. Should I look at just upgrading to a metal tail, such as the microheli unit? Does the align metal tail unit have this same issue?

The newest align tail is a better design. If you set it up in rate mode the difference between right and left is not as bad. I cheated my tail hub out a little bit, so when I set it up in rate mode it is almost dead center. I have also flown it with just centering the pitch slider. A lot of people claim that this is the best way to do it. I cannot say which is best, but for me they both worked. I could not tell a difference between the two.

Put the ball links on the tail rotor bladeson the leading edge side.

I had the same trouble with my mx450, which is very similar. After being in hover trim, there was almost no left over space for the slider to move toward the blades, but a lot between the slider and the boom side. Swapping the ball links to the leading edge side reverses the direction the slider travels, enabling you to use that space.
Because the torque from the main rotor always comes from the same side, the tail rotor pitch needs to be greater when going against that torque. The slider doesn't need to be centered in hover if it's off center towards the easy direction.

HH or not, the torque is the same, thus the position is the same.

Just my 2 cents
Jim

The screw heads go to the outside of the heli that makes it leading edge control on the tail.

All of you were correct. The blade holders were backwards. I must have not noticed this when I reassembled the tail components after a PM session. Its amazing how something as simple as this can make you pull your hair out!

I haven't been able to actually test the fix out yet since its a bit windy here, but I'm confident the issue has been resolved.

Thanks to all for your replies!
