Can the stock Align ESC handle a 13 tooth pinon? This would be a 28-32-3400 and Tp2200 Extremes and 1 Tp Prolite 2100. Im running a 12 tooth now but want a little more headspeed.

Yes, stock align ESC will handle medusa 3400 with 13th pinion with no problem. I had 13 tooth pinion on my medusa 3400 and align ESC, things were really hot after 4,5 mins flight time. I have 12 tooth pinion on now.

Carefull on the heat issue! Make sure you have a heatsink on that Medusa. Make sure you do the mod on that ESC too because it will over heat along with proper air flow over it. For some reason align puts two sided tape on the heat sink and IC chips which doesnt conduct the heat fast enough. I have burned up an Align 35 with that motor before. Switched to the Jazz 40-6-18 since then with no problems. Just speaking from experience.

The jazz 40-6-18 would be a better idea 'cause it controls the head speed very well in governor mode. Then you can set and hold your higher head speed without worrying about overspeeding or using more power than you need to!

Thanks guys! My setup runs pretty hot right now on 12 tooth. I think it would be best save up and get a esc that is a little more up to the job. I still should probably get a heatsink though.

I've been using a Quark 33A for all my TRex 450s and have had good results with 3s and 4s setups.

I will have to look into those. Where you running a Medusa or a energy hog like it? How much for one of those?

On the Quark, I've run all my motors on it:

Medusa 28-32-4200 (very hard on the batteries)
28-40-3400
28-32-3400 (3s/4s)
28-32-2800 (4s)

Hacker A20 6XL
JGF 450TH and 450F
Align 430L and 430XL
AON 3500

Neu 1107/2Y

The quark is about 70 bucks but I believe it is still less than the Jazz. I also use an external BEC although you can run it with the internal BEC.

One more question. What pinion were you running? Will a Quark handle a 13 tooth okay? Oops, thats 2 questions. While Im on a roll, what kind of flight times did you get with the 28-32-3400?

That is the key on the heating up issue also..... But the jazz has an awsome one built in so I dont have to worry about that.

Really? So a Bec is a must. Thanks. And the Qaurk has one built in but an external is better? What if I ran an external on my Align 35amp?

I have usually run my Quark with a BEC but have done so (when I was lazy to solder a BEC to it). It just allows more consistent power to the electronics.

As for the 13T pinion and the Medusa 28-32-3400, It should be fine but I think most ESCs will run hotter using the 3S setup. You'll get a cooler setup using a 4s setup (both motor and ESC will be cooler).

Flight times with the Medusa was about 4.5-5 minutes. That's pretty hard 3D and putting back around 1500-1600 mAmps back. You can run an external on the Align ESC as well.

I guess you solder in the bec on the red, white and black coming from the esc? If I were to run one for now on my current set up would it improve temps? What Im thinking is doing it in incraments, if Im going to get a seperate bec anyway then I can get one now if it will improve efficiency and when funds are availible get a better esc. I won't be able to step up to 4s right now for the above reason.

You have to unplug the red wire that goes from the ESC to the receiver and then solder the BEC red and black leads to the red and black power leads from the ESC to the Deans connector (which go to the battery). That way the power to the BEC is coming directly from the battery.
