I have been thinking about a scale project. Our local Sherif flys a NOTAR/Ducted tail rotor chopper and that is the chopper Id like to build. Does anyone make one for RC ?

yes vario have both the fusalge for the md900 and the hughes.
the mechanics are available with either a two bladed head or four bladed depending on how much detail you want and your flying experiance.
the notar is aparently not an ideal first time progect as the building of it is critical to ensure a good seal in the air duct system

Yup

Vario makes one, or at least did make one.

FBoss certainly notar isn't for first nor for second scale. Vario sells 3 kinds of notar. MD900 & MD500 both of them base on OS or webra engine. As far as I konw non of them will work properly with multiblade rotor head. The problem is: multiblade head absorb alot of power, you need high r.p.m to get good tail control. Therefore vario came to the market with new MD500 with turbine. I fly multiblade scale (you can see my gallery) and I suggest to start with simple scale not multibalde.

I wouldn't agree that it couldn't be a first scale. Just know it would be a challenge. But if you have a model you are passionate about then you will do well versus just going through the motions to get that first out of the way. You have several scale guys in your area so your support will be better than average.

Vario also makes a large 520N that you can build with a turbine power plant. Go to EastCoastScale.com and check out the online store. But everyone else is correct about the multi blade head. Joe Howard does not recommend it because you need more head speed to get it off the ground. But that's not to say that it isn't impossible...this is America, anything's possible. Good luck!

hmm my Notar came from Vario WITH the 5 blade head. I'll use a 2 blade at 1st to get it running well.

I am sure with my Webra 91 eng/tuned pipe that tail control/scale head with have plenty of power.

The notars when 1st introduced had a OS 70 engine so yes power was lacking.

Sorry, shadowfox, I guess that I didn't specify that. My MD900 Explorer did in fact have a Webra .75 in it, not to mention the fact that I live at 6200'. I'm guessing that Joe meant that at this altitude, only the larger motors can run a 5 blade head on a heavy ship.

My point is that if you build a scale ship to fly a multi-bladed head, then make sure you have enough power to turn the head, give you rudder authority, and actually lift the aircraft off the ground.

Mine was severely underpowered, and I learned the hard way.

If you ever find yourself in Colorado Springs, bring it with you and we can compare. I personally would love to see the 520N myself.

I have the new rossi 91 for my explorer.

It is a ring motor that runs perfect in my pod and boom ship.
