If the stubby shaft is no longer gripping in the one-way, then removing one of the bearings may help, as it allows the stubby shaft to find its centre in the one-way, and consequently engage. The following might then help you:

Undo the bolts in the conical connector, thus releasing both the hex starter shaft and the stubby one-way shaft. Heat up the wand piece with the two bearings, and allow the front one to drop out. Make sure the back one remains in place as the piece cools.

Now replace the stubby shaft, screw the wand base onto the part mounted on the starter motor shaft, let the stubby shaft rest up against the front of the starter motor shaft, and replace the conical piece on the stubby shaft. Tighten the caphead bolt, making sure that the conical piece does not rub against the wand base when you push down on it.

Now replace the hex wand and voilá, you get another year or more out of your KSJ unit.

If the one-ways are gone, then I'm unable to help you.

I think you will find that those bearings are not one-way. The uni-directional bearing is in the section that remains bolted to the motor shaft.

The usual problem with the KSJ unit is the stubby transfer shaft looses it's grip on the inside of the conical section that also holds the starter shaft itself. It is advisable to check that aspect thoroughly before replacing the one-way bearing.

Peefor, I'm not replacing the one-way bearing. I'm simply removing one of the ball bearings, allowing the stubby shaft to once again find its own centre in the one-way.

If either the stubby shaft or hex shaft are loose in the conical section, then your comment is correct.

If the one-way bearings themselves are shot, Mini1275, then my solution won't help you.

Here is the link to what I believe is the US importer for KSJ (K&S).

I ordered exactly what you are looking for after the clutch bearing went bad. Personally, I am going to try the Sullivan extension when this thing gives up. Slips like crazy every time I try to start my 90s.

I've had the same problem with Ripmax shafts, my solution is to remove the bearing section and wind some tape on and stuff it into the rubber cup, it works fine.

I have been using the Vario starter wand with good success. It is a little expense, but you get what you pay for.

I found out the bearing is a NTN-NHF10 its a direct replacement of the orginial bearing. I found the part number on the side of the orginial bearing when I removed it from the housing.
