This is great - as I tried to intimate in my post I think there's far more to it than liberal ergo I think/believe x, conservative ergo I think/believe y. What I believe most is that a lot of people on here argue about conservatism and liberalism when they mean republican/democrats. Whilst there's no absolute definition of what conservatism is, if you take a mean from various political monographs throughout the centuries, there's not a huge amount of overlap between Ruplicanism (so far as I can digest from t'internet) and conservatism. I'd consider myself conservative in terms of wanting the government to be small and keep its nose out of my business. I wouldn't say they were tenets of Republicanism.

To have a go at answering some of Spaceman's examples, (just for the sake of interest).

Engineers - I went to a talk just before term finished by Proffessor Simon Baron-Cohen on this very topic and the notion of autistic spectra. It left me fairly convinced of the inherent differences between male and female brains.

Black men/women - Most high profile black men are rappers, emphasising physical strength, strong promiscuous heterosexuality and confused notions of respect. When was the last time you heard 50 cent talk about SAT scores? Without predjudicing myself, the first black female role model that popped into my head 30 seconds ago was Oprah, a bastion of respectability, upstanding and good morals. I've picked random examples, there are of course exceptions, but the trends are there. That might be only 10% of the reason, it might be 90% - I'm not sure.

Lawyers - my experience is that they tend to be whatever suits them in the given context. If it's true that they do tend to be liberals, then touché. Maybe they're good at being presented with a new problem and adapting to how to make money from it. That'd fit in with the original poster's point

I am cautious or drawing conclusions which are reasoned on purely ideological terms. It's never that simple, and one of the things that annoys me is when people assume that it is.

My first black female role model is Halle Berry. She can roll all over me. You can have Oprah.

LouInDeeDeeDee, its called Humor. Most of us don't sit here thinking we can change a liberals mind anymore than we can change the mind of a rock. So rather than get in a useless tit for tat sometimes it better just to make a joke out of it. Where as your answer to everything is to yell

CON!!!!!

Then explain how divorce and single parent homes went from almost non-existent to more than half of American families. Must be because of all this progressive thinking

Whats up spog?

There have been many cultural shifts that have occured over the past 40 years. Some good some bad. Among the bad is a huge increase in crime, the heart of which is disrespect of others. Over simplifying of course, but that's the real problem IMO. Plenty of disrespect to be seen on RR. Poisons everything we do, even an otherwise pleasant hobby.
The United States Crime Index Rates Per 100,000 Inhabitants went from 1,887.2 in 1960 to 5,897.8 in 1991.

I've stayed out of this one, but I'm content knowing that the CONservative bunch is a dying breed. Hopefully soon extinct. We can thank W for that, as he's turned many young people away from the republican party. I think our days as a republican controlled country are nearly over. Have fun while you still can with your redneck/religious politics, 'cause it's not gonna last forever.

People are waking up, realizing that war profiteering, and propping up huge business is not cool. Change for the sake of helping out fellow human beings, and making a better quality of life is cool. Compassion for human beings is not a sign of weakness.

And what are you going to say when gas prices hit $5 a gallon? And the economy tanks? And when the economy tanks people lose their jobs and don't have money to buy helis anymore - therefore you lose you job?? Will you be loving the idealistic BS that dems love to spew then?
People are waking up
No, I think it's quite the opposite.. People here are comfortable so they think they can turn the attentions to their fellow man, but they so easily lose sight of how they got to be so comfortable!

Come on people the world is not a friendly cuddly lets all hug sort of place. The world is cutthroat and harsh - Idealists tend to forget the true nature of things.

This hobby is like Kryptonite to chicks!

andy, gas prices haven't changed, in fact they've gone up since we've had a republican president. He's probably to blame for it! He's in the oil industry, and they make more money if the prices are raised. Come on, man. The economy isn't going to tank, unless the republican version of trickle down economics is kept up. It's been proven time and time again it doesn't work. The top echelon of people get richer, the poor get poorer, and the middle class is destroyed. So, sorry Andy you have it wrong. period.

Andy, Andy, Andy...the only people who do well with a republican controlled government are people in the military weapon making business..I know it's your thing so you're going to be defensive, but use your knowledge to reduce the use of fuel instead.

Very likely part of it. People tend to be more disrespectfull in big cities here, but if you think about crime rates in huge cites like Tokyo VS Los Angeles... seems clear that it still is a cultural degradation thing.

and speaking of cutural degradation....
I'm content knowing that the CONservative bunch is a dying breed. Hopefully soon extinct.

Compassion is not a liberal trait. They just talk the talk and put it on their bumper sticker. They give men fish but are afraid of teaching them how to fish for fear of losing control. Liberal ideology succeeds when people get lazy and think someone else (government) can take care of them. Then it fails them.

Yes, [insert George Bush here] was a true liberal. He was intolerant and engaged in behavior that he himself would not permit others to do. He sought power through deception and promised an easy path to those who would follow

... But honey it was only $$$
