Bought an Align 4050kv motor and with the 13 tooth pinion, has way too much power for me. By using a 11 tooth pinion, will this calm this motor down? Or should I stick with the stock motor and use the 11tooth pinion? Trying to get motor to run cooler?

The stk mtr is a heat pump. I went with a JGF450TH to get the temps down.

I really dont know much about the Align mtrs but going to a smaller pinion will reduce the load and reduce the temps as well.

Rick, not to sound dense but where can I get one of these motors and who makes them. I will see if my LHS can order one. The cost?

You can order them directly from http://www.justgofly.com I ordered two motors from them before - great to deal with.

Murp, thank you for the justgofly info. I will order a 450th motor as soon as shop reopens on the 19th. Now to just sell this align motor. Too much power for me. Been flying for 3 months now, best to stick to basics.

quick question....as long as the motor performs well and gives good runtimes..what difference does it make if the motor gets a little hot??..I'm still rather new to this myself and just like to gather as much info as possible......my motor runs hot but I get good performance and 11 min of hover time on a 2100MaH batt consistently

I'm now running an Align 430L 4050kv motor in my MT. I started with an 11-tooth Align pinion and it flew fine. I now have a RevCo 12-tooth in it with the throttle curve set at straight 90% With Radix blades it is good power. Not a rocket ship, but plenty for everything I do.

fenderstrat - running a motor hot could lead to preamature failure of the motor. The most likely failure mode is having the windings short together from the insulating varnish burning away. You may be fine most days but if you fly in high ambient temperatures you might push the temperature limits of your motor. A secondary reason is that generating heat takes power and reduces your overall efficiency.

BTW... I would guess that your motor is running hot because it is not operating in its sweet spot. What is your motor pinion combo?

stock motor with a 11T pinion....it runs at the same temp as when I had the stock 13T pinion but I get longer runtimes

you don't want to run a motor hot. heat will lower the efficiency of the motor. what this translate to is,

first the motor heats up real hot during flight (>150 Celsius)

then the heat lower the magnetism from the magnets.(this what peoples mean when they say a motor loses its efficiency)

then, since the motor loses a little bit magnetism, the motor draws a little more power (amp) from the esc to put out the same amount of power like when it was before it was demagnetize. you can feel this power drop when you fly in a hot afternoon. you notice that you have to raise the throtle stick a little higher to get the same power feel. this effect lessen in the evening time when ambient temp drop and in a cold winter day.

then, since the motor draws more power (amp) from the esc, the esc heats up a little bit. same voltage, just more amp.

then, since the motor draws more power from esc to compensate rpm requirement, because the magnets demagnetize a little bit, the motor heats up even more and magnets demagnetize a little more and motor draw even more power (amp) from the esc, and esc heats up a little more. this process happen in about 5-7 minute of flight.

the magnet will not be permanently demagnetize after a single or couple flight. but it will be permanently demagnetize little by little after a couple of flight and so fourth if you continue to fly it this way. thats why some of you may notice why your esc runs a little warmer than the first day you bought it.

some ways to remedy this is by using some coolings on especially the motor then the esc. like a fan. other ways include lower gear ratio, larger motor, higher cell count. when you use higher cell count you get higher voltage, when you have higher voltage the motor draw less power (amp) to put out the same rpm.
higher voltage + less power(amp) = less heat to motor and esc = better efficiency
but of course your motor and esc must be able to handle the higher voltage. higher voltage esc and motor = more $$$

or you can wait till winter comes and don't have to change anything at all. best efficiency. throttle feels consistence and aggressive. but another problem arises. cyclic lag, feels stiffy, not fun at all.

2 cents

I replaced the stock OBL 29/36-10H heat pump for a JustGoFly 450TH 3000 KV.

With the 13T pinion and 325mm Radix blades head speed (Kontronik Jazz 40-6-18 governor mode) dropt from 2850 (OBL 29/36-10H) to 2600 RPM.

Non 3D f(l)ighttime increased significant (FP EVO25 2170mAh's) from 6 minutes to 8 minutes with some spare juce left

Note: FP EVO25 2170mAh 8 minutes f(l)ighttime: 1585mAh recharge (80% discharge = 1736mAh).

The JustGoFly 450TH runs significant cooler

Maybe, I just picked up a couple of the 12tooth pinions and put them on the "heat pump". This will have to do me until I can order the 450th motor from JGF. Wondering if I should put a 9tooth on this Align 4050Kv motor I have or picking up an Align 3500Kv or 3700Kv. Adivse?????

Does anybody know off hand what the shaft diameter of the OBL 29/36-10H motor is? Looking to order an 11 tooth pinion from Readyheli but since I'm at work I can't get to my Mini titan.
