Yes, doing mild 3D and the heli started spinning. I hit throttle hold but couldn't save it, it was too low.

After inspection, the carbon boom was broken and the boom supports still attached to the heli and boom. The heli is a Fury Tempest.

What could have caused the boom to break?

Some time ago, one of the screws attaching the boom suports to the horizontal fin base was broken so I replaced the screws for the thicker and stronger from my Stratus. Are these original Tempest screws really weak for the application or this was an indication of further issues?

This happened yesterday but two weeks ago a guy from the local club told me he only uses custom aluminium booms for all his Fury's after too many carbon tail booms broken.

What do you guys think?

Wow, that sucks. How old was the carbon boom? Did you ever bump the boom (trying to get it in the car) where it might have cracked slightly and just decided to fully brake yesterday. Just a thought.

Sorry for your lose

Thanks A.J.

No, I didn't bump the boom and this was the original boom which is over a year old.

I know now of 4 guys who decided to make their own aluminium tail booms for their Fury's due to an apparent tend of carbon booms to break in mid air.

Just curious, if you and your friends know this is a common problem, why were you still running a carbon boom?

I hear guys loosing the boom in the air with stratus, but I never had any problems with mine. Don't know, perhaps some kind of vibration generated from the tail rotor causing the boom to brake over a period of time, and aluminun will handle vibration better than carbonfiber.:rolleye
build your boom assy again and before you install it in the heli, take a drill
make some kind of coupling so you could spin the tail rotor shaft while you're holding it with your hand. You will feel any vibration coming from tail rotor.

Life is too short,so I'm gonna fly as much as I can!!

The base where it has broken is the part which of the tail boom which would be under the most load whilst flying, as torque= force x distance. If the boom was going to crack due to the force of the tail rotor, that's where it would crack. Perhaps a hairline fracture in the boom before you took off, which then cracked rapidly under load?

Wouldn't a out of balance tail generate a forward/aft cyclic type vibration? In the photos, it looks like the boom has cracked sideways. It looks as if it has cracked from the left side of the boom first, then the last bit of carbon has peeled, and finally given in. Looking again, it has cracked paralell to one weave, then parallel to the other once it has peeled...
