I wrap the canopy with cheap paper towels, put it in a trash bag and soak it with laquer thinner. Turn it a couple times over the next 30-60 minutes and the paint wipes off very easy. It doesn't harm fiberglass or plastic canopies either.

Have a gallon of thinner and alot of cheap paper towels. It's really messy, especially at the beginning when you start wiping.

I second the thinner method.
Instead of paper towels I used rags. You can wash it off easily and can really scrub down with it if needed to, without it tearing and rolling into balls of paper.

I soak the towel/rag with thinner and wrap it around the canopy and put it in a black thrash bag and tied the bag up.
Leave it in there for about half and hour and the paint should come off easily.

Be prepared for the stink and the mess when the paint comes off. I would wear gloves. The smell really sticks on you.
