Finally got around the editing my helmetcam video from this season skiing in Aus down to the resonable footage with some music audio.

http://www.vimeo.com/user731458

Ended up with 6 files

Did some cam changes during

Vid 3&4 is the first try with the KT&C camera from rangevideo
It comes with 4mm lens fixed iris.
1/3 sensor.

Recording to MPEG 640x480 cheapo SD card Hand held

Vid 1&2
Recording to mini DV tape at 720x576 then to H264 codec in VDub after deinterlace.
I got an auto iris 2.8mm lens for wider angle and iris control.
It plugs into the back of the KT&C cam which has adjustment on it.

But set output adjustment on the KT&C cam to handle brightest white I could find at home in sunny day off glossy car duco, but the snow was still too much for it.

Vid 5&6 finally got it right by turning down sensitivity to min so that the snow didn't blow out the vid like earlier ones so now seem to handle light ok.

Color rendition is not fantastic, possible the Sony version of this KT&C camera is better for that.
This KT&C one is 0.05 lux low light.
Te Sony is 0.5 like most.

Problems with helmet and windage, ok at slower speeds but a little faster and it gets the shakes and my head is most certaionyl not shaking that much.

Aside from the shake I think a better slimer helemt would cure it came out ok
But still want better image.
I think 1/2 sensor 3CCD is next but I cant see how it will record to AV in on a hand held cam to full res or quality.

Anyone seen a good quality mini cam that can record to DV in on hand held cam ?

Cheers
Dave

OK
So we strap the camera to the chooks head and then strap the chook to the helmet so when the poorly fitting helmet shakes on my head which is not shaking, the chicken will compensate.

I got a better idea, kill and eat the chicken
I need a helmet that fits.

The one I am using.

Is loose on the head, not a ski helemet but I bike helmet and real darn cheap at that.

Nice work!

We used Gath helmets for our surf life saving helmet cams. I couldn't find an off the shelf helmet cam that fit my needs so just ended up builing my own.

The first version suffered from a fragile mount connection between the helmet and the camera. Here's the footage (sorry about the compression)

http://www.vimeo.com/235884

That has now been fixed and hiting solid 2meter waves at 60km/h doesn't affect it at all (can't say the same for my body though).

Check out the chook in the wetsuit!

That was fun to watch !
Thx for the tip.

Yeah I think the helmet is the trick.
I prolly need to get a proper ski hard hat they seem to be a firmer fit and dont stick out so high on the head like the foamy bike hat I got.

What cam and recording device on that one ?

Cheers

That was using a solid state MP4 recorder. I now use DV recorders with a record trigger on the wrist.

I'm still on the hunt for a decent broadcast quality mini solid state recorder but they are expensive and I've yet to find one in the sub $1k price range.

The camera itself is a 520 line sony bullet cam encased in aircraft grade aluminium mount (from Launch Helmet cams).

The Launch Cams uses the Sony Sensor
Ive read the KT&C is better for low light but the Sony is better for color rendition which is probably why your color is better than what I am getting.
A move to a Sony cam for me could be an improvement since low light isn't the issue in Snow.

I know what you mean about the recording
I bought 3 cheap cams to try out before I realised that if you dont spend over 1k like you say, better off using the mini DV.
I just not keen on eating snow at speed with over 1k of cam in my pocket.
My bud who was with me already killed his Sony TRV in a fall on the same day (cost him a fair bit when he bought it a few years ago), now just spits ERR31 which is terminal.

I saw this device (pocket size) which claims to take AV in and convert it to DV in for cams.
But not sure if there is any advantage to it as AV in is limited anyway by the cam output I expect.
May just be that AV in is the limit for Helmetcams at this stage.
At least affordable ones.

I use a camel pack to house the waterproof case and recording gear. Keeps it protected and out of the way and reduces the pucker factor of hauling 1K+ of recording gear around in what is essentially a hostile environment.

Let me know how you go. I'm always looking for new ways to improve recording quality .
