Eyeinsky, you left off the most important part of the quote:
It is disintegrating all the while it is in use.
Now your quote:
There for to have failure during operation with properly tuned engine it would take more than just open circuit.
This isn’t true either. The element is very fragile. If one end of the element breaks free it is likely the other end will too due to mechanical fatigue of the subsequent explosions. It is very difficult to make a reliable glow plug. The dissimilar metals have to be welded to a steel case and that becomes the weakest point.

Everybody has the right to make their own decisions. But you shouldn’t pull the sheet over your head about what you are up against.

Nothing is 100% reliable that is true, but you can get awful darn close to 100% if you can predict failure time. That’s what a PM schedule is all about. You cannot predict failure time on a glow plug. I know a person that took a brand new $8.00 plug out of the package and it didn’t work. He tried taking it back … tough luck, it was not warranted. They are too difficult to manufacture and get reliability. That makes it perfectly fine for an R/C hobby but typically not good for a business.

Again, I am not telling you what to do. You can make up your own mind and weigh the risk but you should realize you are taking more risk using a glow powered heli.

I understand what you are saying, to be sure. I would agree that a glo plug could be considered a weak link in the system. I also think there are other weak links in the system. The idea should be to reduce the number of weak links, right?

I don't think the glo-plug argument about how unreliable it is is incorrect by some standards, but I'm also not convinced that it's entirely correct. I own gas and glo helis and here are MY numbers. Others probably have some different numbers.

Raptor 50 glo heli - 200 plus photo flights (approx), 1 mechanical failure (engine quit), total damage $100

Bergen EB Heli - 9 flights (or so), 6 photo flights, 1 mechanical failure (tail control bolt sheared), total damage over $700

I will give you that from single instances this data can't be considered "gospel", but that's all it took for me to opt for sticking with the nitro bird.

That being said, I still have a gasser that I am strongly considering keeping and getting up and running again. It'd be nice to not have the mess, and hopefully I can boost the reliablity stats for me personally over glo.

I don't think Chris would be selling many heli's if this was a realistic mean time failure rate. But I can see where you would be turned away from gassers because of your experience.

Oh, I absolutely agree. I actually think the Bergen is a very well built machine. But as you can see I've also had great stats with the Raptor and it's worked for me. Chris and everyone at Bergen were helpful after the incident. Someday, like I said, I may do gassers again.

Thank you for your wisdom it is well appreciated. I will take all you have said under advisement. I have been considering going with electric on this small machine. I also will be going with gas power plant on my next build not sure on the mechanical. I am leaning towards JR.

Hard job competing with gravity.
