today i was warming up flying the 500 linking some great moves together and WHAM, power cutout ~50 feet up. Miraculously, the ENTIRE head and tail assemblys are fine. Shafts are busted, main frame, and landing gear. Yet to inspect for bearings, motor, etc. I have NO clue what happened. I had total power cutoff and the loss of headspeed was so sudden that I couldn't tell if I was still in control. The main gear was completely fine. I did notice the battery was disconnected when I pulled the canopy off, but it landed right on where the connector was, also crunching my beautifully painted canopy.

So now its down to the painstaking autopsy and the dreded electronic component testing.

Ill post pics.

Sucks to hear about the crash
What tx are you using?
Jim had a cut out crash the other day, using spektrum. I'm thinking we might still need to ground out the tail boom on the 500..

If you are using Deans plugs, you can slightly bend one prong to help them stay together better in flight.

8103 with an R790 Rx. ive NEVER had a glitch or lockout before, and ive flown at this field a number of times. There is no industrial equipment anywhere near it. It's a school field.

Tomorrow is teardown day.

Sorry to hear, quattro. Nothing bites more than a crash from an unexplained cause. I almost prefer dumb-thumbing it as at least you know why it went in. I guess it's all part of the hobby. Good luck with the rebuild. Hope you get it flying again soon.

10 to 1 it was the crappy cold solder joint on those battery connectors that came apart on you last time. Did you fix them?

cheapest insurance and peice of mind when it comes to connectors is to use a small zip strap through the deans male to female every flight, a pair of snips when your done and 2-3 cent zip strap, a cheap peice of mind imho.

...Once upon a time there were Nitros, flybars and frequency pins...

i didnt see any wiring come loose. and the battery must have disconnected from impact, otherwise i wouldnt have been able to get it upright before impact.

ill do a thorough inspection tomorrow.

How hard did you guys hit? I have read testimonials of crashes that took out just about everything but the frames. You both had them break? What type of damage happened that warrants replacement? Please let us know how the electronics fared. Thanks.

well, my frame broke because it was the point of impact. it cracked through at the front lower area near the battery, and then twice on the top near the speed controller.

the head and tail look fine sans shafts.

this sounds like a classic static discharge case. Try grounding out the boom and you should be good to go again..
Either that, or you flew too long on your lipo and hit cutoff voltage.. unless you are programmed for a very low cutoff.

chadtyro,i hit hard on the skids from about 20ft.the frame broke where it attaches to the skids on the R side.but compared to trex this heli is easy to fix and costs a lot less, trex frame 1/2 is $65 and the logo was $33.

could be the boom then, because i was only 2.5 min into the flight. i just recharged the battery and i only put ~2A into it.

ive got the head apart and the electronics out. frame is taking a while, then ill do the tail. all of the squares i used to mount my electronics tore up their shrink wrap. anyone know where i can get shrink wrap for stuff like ESC/BEC/RX?

I had huge problems with PCM lockouts on my Raptor E550 which I couldn't track down, swapping to Spektrum totally cured it but in hindsight I'm pretty sure it was belt static and the 500 uses a very similar setup to the E550 now. You could try using graphite powder or anti-static spay on the belt or a silicon lube, I use silicon shock oil sold for RC cars.

It sounds like the frames are very ridged in torsion but poor at shock loads, at least they are reasonably cheap.

Zip ties....

Having been in Lipo's from day one....and having had one of the very first lipo fires (Nov 03...total loss of garage contents, $125k, but no structural damage... I don't think I would suggest zip ties on the battery connectors. I had a battery go on spool up, and got it out of the Heli in the nick of time. 10s2p going up is pretty spectactular. Cause was using 2 packs, a 4s and 6s, and my son connected with a parallel connector (used in a 27% plane) when we should have using a series connector.

THe 500 and 600's sound like great heli's....just what I've been waiting for!!!! Love the Logo Quality!

Try Fry's electronics, Ace hardware, Digi-key (online) etc..

Be carefull of re-shrinking the ESC. I just had a fire a couple weeks ago from a CCHV85 that was rewrapped. Made sure everything was sound and no shorts etc, but it went up in a ball of flames on it's second flight
Burnt my new painted canopy, but I managed to get the ESC off of the heli while it was burning. not a scratch on the heli.

How would you ground out the boom? I haven't had an issue on any other helis but I've seen a few people do it on Logos before and thing I will also.

the same thing happened to me

I was flying last Friday when I heard the motor quit..i was using a 40-o hacker jeti esc and a mega 20 30 3 on a 4s4p TP pack...i think the esc went into some kinda thermal shut down....I autoed it down but I managed to bust a linkage in the head cuz I came down pretty hard

max amps at full -tive is 32

solution: im moving to a cc 45 esc and cutting a hole in the canopy

got it all back together and set up. it was quite easy to repair. now i have a hardened main and tail shaft :-)

thanks sean and ian at aeromodel for getting that stuff together so quickly for me.

i bench tested all of my electronics with positive results....but its still completely unknown what caused the incident. ill be very careful getting it back up in the air.

do any of you have any links/pics to grounding the boom?

thanks, Adam
