10 years or so ago I picked up a simulator, purchased and built an X-Cell 60, and as part of a local club learned to hover and do box patterns tail in, sideways, and some tail out. Unfortunately after only a month or so I had to retire since my time was unavoidably getting consumed elsewhere.

It's time to get back into things, it's been way too long, so here I am. I checked the LHS and they do still carry some X-Cell parts. I don't know if anyone from the local club still flies or works with X-Cell 60's, I'm looking into that. My current setup, which has been sitting in the basement for the past 10 years or so, is as follows.

Kit: X-Cell 60 (stock, metal frames, plastic servo tray)
Engine: OS 61 SFN-H
Radio: JR XP783H (module based) w/ 1 NEH-531 throttle and 4 NES-4131 servos
Gyro: Futaba FP-G154

Now that I'm getting back into it I'd ultimately like to grow into 3D and at some point I'll need a new setup to do so. Although it may be possible I'm not interested in trying to make that happen with the current kit.

Looking at my options, I'm thinking about...

1. If it's feasible, try and get my current setup back in the air to practice with and then ultimately get a new setup to do 3D with once I'm ready.
2. If it's not feasible, invest in a new setup now.

Some of the questions I've been thinking about are...

1. How risky would it be to be to try and get everything working again. If there's a good chance that it's going to face plant into the dirt due to how long all of the various pieces, parts, and electronics have been sitting around (even after an inspection and maintenance) then I'd rather make the investment now. If there's little chance that there will be a major mishap of some sort then it may make more sense to defer a new setup.
2. Is it still flyable without an overhaul after sitting that long?
3. If not, any suggestions on what types of parts would need to be inspected, maintained, or are candidates for immediate replacement?
4. Excluding the battery, any concerns with on-board radio components, servos, mechanical gyro after sitting that long?
5. Any idea of the market for an X-Cell 60 and / or JR XP783H? I'm a bit more partial to investing in a new setup now and if these may still hold some value to others I'd probably look to just sell them.

Any thoughts, opinions, or feedback would be greatly appreciated.

definitly get a new gyro and radio, you may be able get get away with those servos for a little while, but i would strongly suggest getting something like a raptor 50 with modern equiptment, it will make comming back so much easier.

there are people that collect the older helis, but if you decide to fly that one upgrade all the electronics and the swash servos then if you purchase a new heli you can use the new electronics.if your electronics fail you will destroy everything.

I still have my older machines and rarely fly them. I still practice and the modern equipments help a lot, specially when the parts are available anywhere and are cheap.

I got into heli's because my father bought one when I was a kid. He flew it twice and put it on the shelf; it was one of the original shuttles. About 13 years later I decided I wanted to learn how to fly. I threw a new RX and TX battery in it and learned how to fly with it. I used all the original electronics and engine. I just made sure everything was still tight.

The x-cell line of helicopters are great machines and 10 years isn't all that old (heck my raptor is 6 years old) but they can be rather expensive to repair and for some reason require a lot of tinkering. I would recommend putting that heli back on the shelf and picking up a good 50 sized machine. Personnally I like the Raptor but I've heard a lot of good things about the Align 600n and the Knight 3D. Any of those would take you from basic training all the way to 3D. Check with your LHS and the local fliers and see what you can easily get parts for (believe me you'll need them ) and what local support is available. And... definitely invest some money in a newer radio and gyro.

No reason why it can't fly, just give it a good refresh and once (or twice) over.

I have a similar story to EvoFlight50, my dad had a Shuttle way back when, never got past training gear. Fast forward 15 years or so, and I get my hands on it. I knew it was not up to today's standards, but wanted to know if I had an interest before laying down big bucks for a new setup.

I cycled the Tx and Rx batteries. The Rx was great (!), the Tx I replaced. Checked all links, belt, replaced the tail rotor because it was yellow and brittle with age. Had to track down starting equipment, new glow plug, and sure enough I got it going. Hovered it a few times, then bought a Trex.
