Hi All,

I just tried my new MS 550 carbon fiber blades. They worked pretty well. I've had 250 flights on the woodies and have had great success with them -- even doing loops, rolls, and flips. I swear, the woodies didn't fly any different than the 515 RotorTechs that I tried so why risk the extra expense?

The 550s seem to fly about the same in loops, rolls, and flips. It might be flying a bit faster though. Doing some high-banked turns, the Swift really seemed to be moving.

The most pleasant surprise was the power consumption. I tried a 5 minute flight and only used 2200 mah! That translates to an 8 minute flight taking out 3500 mah. I was expecting higher power consumption, but it actually seems more efficient with the 550s. (Note: I'm going to slowly work up to that time to ensure I don't take too much out of the batteries.)

The other thing that surprised me was when I went from Normal to FM1 flight mode. With the 520 woodies, I was always able to hear a distinct increase in rpm when I went from 70% to 90% power. With the 550s, I'm switching from 75% to 100% power, and I notice no increase in rpm. I haven't tached it yet, but will let you know what the head speed is once I get the chance.

I was thinking about upgrading to the TRex 600E. But now I'm not so sure. The Swift is compact and appears that it will provide long flight times. I just might enjoy the Swift with the 550 blades.

Keep 'em flying.

I've found the same thing with my rotortech 560's. I believe the thinner airfoil has less drag even with the longer length. TimT

I've been flying my Swift some more, and it's a real rocket ship with the CF 550s on it. When I do big high-banked figure eights, the little Swift is really fast.

I finally tached my Swift. Head speed is at 1960 rpm at 100% governed throttle. That's just where I want it. Just under 2000 rpm.

BTW, I bought MS 550 blades because they were out of RotorTechs at my LHS. I've noticed that one of the blades has some tiny stress cracks at the root that I can see with my sunglasses on. I can see them but not feel them. The blade still seems strong. I'm going to fly it. But it is a bit disconcerting. I fly RotorTechs on my TRex 600N and I like the blade design a lot better.

Another aside, I had my engine quit while inverted with my TRex this weekend. The RotorTechs allowed me to get it upright and auto it in safely. I really like those RotorTechs.

Keep 'em flying.

can you tell us your setup please ... ie motor/pinion/number of cells/type of cell, etc etc

i was thinking of experimenting with lighter blades, since my helimax 530s are such amp hogs

Sorry for the delay WrathOfKahn, I didn't see your post.

I had to by a set of SABs because the cracks in one MS Composit blade got too bad. I had to send the MS set back.

Anyway, the weights on the blades are:

550 MS Composit (3Ds I think): 117g each
550 SAB: 110g each

The chord on both sets of blades is about the same as the stock woodies. Both sets of blades have given me 6.5 minute flights taking out about 3200mah.

I am flying:

9 tooth pinion
6S2P TP 5000 pack (I believe they are 25C packs)
Century Outrunner 600+
Century 80/100 ESC (I am using the governor feature at 100%)

Hope that helps. The whole system seems pretty well matched. It's very powerful. I like it with the 550s better because the heli seems to fly a little lighter (the TP 5000s are heavy).

Keep 'em flying,

Just a quick note on the MS Composit blade that developed stress fractures in the first nine flights. Well, I sent the blades back to the mfg in Indiana on Saturday and had a new set returned to me by Thursday.

It's nice to see that MS Composit stands behind their products and that they get the returns in the mail promptly. I'm looking forward to giving the new pair a try.

Keep'em flying.

Yea MS composite are good blades to, don't forget VBlades will have TST 550s out before new year, those will rock!

...Once upon a time there were Nitros, flybars and frequency pins...
