It means absolutely nothing!

If you have to cheat to get there it ain't getting there!

When the roid investigation is over his record should be reset because if you don't do it honestly and like the old Pro's did it should not count.

My .02 cents worth.

Thanks
Dan

I wouldn't say it means nothing. I personally still think Hank is the home run king, until A-Rod breaks the record. But I'd be willing to bet that 60-70% of the baseball players of this generation have taken steroids, and none of them are anywhere near 756 home runs. Steroids or not, it's still a hell of an accomplishment. I just don't recognize it as a record because it is cheating.

^^Yep, if A-rod stays healthy, he will most likely surpass Bonds' record so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Barry Bonds juiced, a dishonorable act. The playing field upon which all baseball records are compared has therefore been unfairly tilted by Bonds and all those like him who are willing to steal a record rather than earn it.

Add to that the fact that the man hasn't the decency nor respect for the game (nor for Hank Aaron's honest achievement of that record) to come clean about it and 'fess up, so he'll now and forever in many fan's minds have an ASTERISK next to ALL his supposed records, and he's earned it.

Barry Bonds is no better than a common thief. He stole a significant number of HR's by juicing. I despise the man for his dishonorable choices and I avoid watching or attending Giants games whenever he appears.

Was roids illegal when Bonds allegedly took it? I know that when the Bash Bros juiced, it was pretty much understood that many professional players juiced too. Remember, roids alone doesn't make you stronger, you still need to work out in order to utilize the juice. This isn't to justify steroids, just some factoids.

Also, can it be that pitchers sucked when Hank earned the record? In other words, I cant believe that players nowadays are weaker and less talented than Hank Aaron (not to take away from Aaron). I believe that pitchers have become more talented than Aarons days. Just a thought.

They have been illegal to use as these guys do for many, many years - I remember hearing about them in the late 80/early 90s for sure.

More importantly than the roids look at the mechanical advantage his arm protection gives him.

Roids were not a class 3 substance until about 1990-91. Baseball did not have them on the "banned" substance list until relatively recently.
Has anyone done a study to see how many home runs he has hit while being "clean" since all the scrutiny started?
Should Babe Ruth have an asterisk next to his name because he was a wife beater? That's breaking the law also.
Should Mike Vick have an asterisk next to his stats for the last 2 years because of his activities? That's breaking the law also.
Just some points for discussion.
Let me be clear that I don't condone taking roids.

Wife beating doesn't enhance your physical performance though. I think that is the main issue...unless you beat your wife with a baseball bat in which case it may provide an unfare performance enhancing advantage.

You are missing the point. Its not about breaking the law in general, its about breaking a law that directly affects your in game performance. You know, cheating to get ahead. Pete Rose broke a baseball law many years ago that, in my opinion, is less grieveous than taking roids and he is still shunned by the MLB to this day. The Tour De France is the best example of this - so many winners/contenders in that race are removed each year due to performance enhancers (which made them "contenders" in the first place).

Those other guys you mentioned, the laws they broke warrant legal punishment (Ruth is dead, so too late there - hehe) but despite how bad their actions were - they did not add to their game. THis thread is about a juicer hitting another home run and taking the record from someone that played clean.

It does not matter when baseball officially placed them on the banned list (heck they probably waited as long as possible as the juiced players added some excitement to a pretty dull game) - they were illegal from 1990 according to your post - that covers most of Bond's career, right?

Anyone that cheats, in any way, to get ahead is scum in my book. True heroes and people to look up to get to their goals through their own effort, blood, sweat, and tears. The use of a performance enhancer is a true cowards way to the top. If this investigation turns out as it appears it will, he will have the asterix next to his name forever as some else stated. That will be a laugh.

Pro sports are becoming a joke. I have all but abandoned them - with the NFL being my last holdout (but that is quickly becoming just like the MLB and NBA in terms of paying pieces of garbage millions to act like idiots, not to mention the "me" attitude which will never work in football as it is one of the few true team sports). Oh well, less time focused on professional sports means more family and heli time

Congrats Bonds on your record, enjoy that asterix!! hehe

Yesterday was 5 years to the day that basebally started testing for steroids. They haven't been a banned substance in baseball for a very long time. It's been widely known by everyone from the ball boy to the commissioner that everyone has been juicing.

The good part is now they are very serious about getting all that crap out of the sport, and that generation is pretty much exiting the league.

I said they were illegal for a long time, not banned by the MLB, Being illegal should automatically make them illegal to use in baseball or anywhere else for that matter, regardless of when the MLB made an official rule about them.

I hope you are right though about them cleaning up, pro sports need it badly. It will be interesting to see how dedicated they are to it when some of baseball's poster boys turn up to be big abusers - will they have the balls to take action then??? I hope so.
