We took our Observer EB out today to test streaming video over a field-deployable broadband wireless network. This is a montage from 30 minutes of tape recorded on-board the Observer. The video streamed over the network was done in real time from the live video downlink.

We will be demonstrating this capability during an IED detection and mitigation scenario as part of a tactical network topology exercise in a couple weeks.

You may notice a couple Chinook helis in the background parked on the apron we fly from. You will also see a fixed wing UAV on the ground which is a Pointer Small Tactical UAV. It's a hand launched, 9ft wingspan electric UAV.

Enjoy!

We're using the 500mW 2.4ghz downlink from Black Widow.

The blurriness isn't a product of the camera, it's a product of compressing and stripping the video down for web broadcast. YouTube also does their own compression that removes a lot of video quality.

If I left it at full DV quality, YouTube wouldn't allow the upload because the file size would be about 300Megs.

just what i thought, kinda like RunRyred when you post a picture,is understandable, they want to use the least minimum space so they dont run out i guess, well the video is great though,

i think i might get me a BW downlink i've heard alotta good things about them,i have a cheapy one that i bought long ago but doesnt work too good, the picture comes and goes,i guess you get what you pay for,Huh?

i already bought some eyetop glasses that will work great for a single man operation,we'll see i also have a 7 inch lcd screen and im working on the cameraship,

i just hope it works ok cause im making my own and it is not as good as yours of corse, will have to experiment till i can get the best vibration free setup

Have fun and good luck with your setup. This Observer with all equipment has reached about $10,000. We will be building two more that will have UAV autopilots on board. That piece will be about $40K, with $24K just in the autopilot systems.

One thing, make sure you get the 8Dbi Patch Antenna for your downlink receiver, or even better the big 14Dbi. It makes a world of difference in your downlink video quality. It has to be aimed at the heli, but if you're not moving around a lot it's not a problem.

Cheers,
Erich
