This may be a stretch for rr, but are there any push mower experts out there? My current mower is 10 years old and in need of replacement. Small yard. Takes about 30 minutes to mow and another 30 to edge, weed eat and blow clippings including butt scratching time (union breaks)

What engines are prefered? What mower brands?

I see some nice mowers for $300 or under which is were i'm looking. It doesn't need to be self propelled or have a bagger but i want something that will fine mulch and have 6.5 horse power.

I see things i like in the $300 and under with husqvarna, honda, toro, cub cadet, snapper.

This should be interesting so let's have it.

We have always had snapper push mowers with briggs and straton engines, they have been great, but i believe they are more than $300. At least i know with a bagger and self propelled is, i dont know what on without those would be, but thats my reccomendation.

I just picked up a Toro 20072 high wheel model recently. It is a great mower and I got it for less than $300 at Home Depot. It has been devouring our grass well and has really been a great machine so far for us.

Umm its a big wheel, self propel mower w/ b&s motor, multch, bag.... Dont kno name though.. Had it now 6 years still like new. Bought it at Sear only for peace of mind really... With their warrentee you can pretty much destroy the mower and take it back to get a new one.. Or be nice to your mower and just take it back for free servicings..

Who mows the lawn? You or the misses?

I have my wife trained well and she mows our postage stamp size lawn quick with the $250 easy pull start lawn boy that we bought 7 years ago.

She basically pushes it into the yard, starts it, then shuts it off.

She says it it theraputic. I believe (and encourage)her. She does a great job.

So depending on the size of the lawn and how much you want to spend/maintain the LM, go cheap!!!!

When you reach certain point in life you "outsource" the lawnmowing actvities.. You get a way better job done and it turns out cheaper in the long run.. Unless perspiring in the heat is something you enjoy.

HONDA!...precision engineered, durable and quiet...makes B & S seem like a bag of nails. The downside is cost of parts (when you eventually need them)
@ Pigroll ...Right on the button!..People park 'em at the end of the season, with the carb. full...fuel evaporates during warm day....moisture condenses on cold nights...water corrodes brass jets and shotty die-gast carb....next season it don't start !!!!
fools buy another new one....wise men strip, clean and rebuild....putt puttt puttt puttt.
that's the way to do it!

thanks for the replies. the reason for replacement is that i want something with more horsepower (it has 3hp) and better mulching. the one i have runs but the briggs is losing power and smokes a bit. i got nice thick bermuda grass and this one tends to bog a bit.

i do the yard work myself for the excersize and i enjoy doing it.

it is the car washing, waxing and detailing i prefer to have someone else do.

I own a power equipment co. Briggs powered machines are your best bet. STAY AWAY from HONDA and TECUMSEH! The honda powered machines from all of the big box stores have the new honda engines on them. Piles of junk! You can tell this engine by the OHV cam cover with the curved part for the timing belt. Yes I said timing belt. The last one I took apart had a plastic camshaft!. This engine also has the angle split crank case. These engines grenade at the slightest abnormality, low oil, using on a hill, dirty filter, ect. They put this engine on everything now and we see nothing but problems. Snapper with a briggs is a bulletproof mower. The machine will outlast the engine. The toros at home cheapo are not even made by toro, westinghouse I believe. The local toro dealer will not even service them. PM me with any other questions.

Isn't all of this kinda big overkill for a lawn like that?
It's less than what I have and there a small electric one will do the job, less noise and less pollution, cheap, simple.

i think i am going to strongly consider the snapper s21.

i owned a snapper riding mower when i bought my first house south of atlanta to cut the one acre lot i was on. it was a reconditioned rider with a new engine and i loved it.

if i get the snapper it will be the last mower i'll ever have to buy.

6.5hp 300 bux.

i did look at the feasability (cost/benefit study) and did the math on doing it yourself vs outsourcing the work.

the yard needs mowing every 4 to 5 days per month or it gets too tall. if you cut bermuda more than 1/3 of it's height it will cause it to brown out for a couple of days until it greens back up.

if a lawn care servie is paid $40 very 5 days over an 8 month growing season (north texas bermuda), considering a 30 day month, the total cost for a lawn service at $40 a pop would equal $1920 per season not including fetilizer and other lawn treatments.

over a ten year period that comes to $19,200.00.

a $300 mower and 4 hours per month would make more sense to me and take the remaining $18,900 over the 10 year period and invest it in a mutual fund (american funds)or an equity indexed annuity with a guarantee of no losses (that is what equity indexed annuities do),calculating a 50% participation rate indexed to the S&P, that has the potential to earn 7% average over the 10 years, you have yourself a clear picture of the smart move on doing the lawn yourself versus $19,200 going in the lawn boys pocket.

this must be why the lawn services pull the trailer with the mowers with a $50,000 pickup truck.
