Hi All

I managed to pick one of these really cheap, hardly any flying done on it.

I have heard some bad stories regards to gear Boxs failing/not up to much - is this true ?

Ian/Coolice - At charmouth you did not fly yours cos there was a problem with the gear box, has this been sorted?

I am interested, what are the pitch and throttle curves that some of you are using?

I am looking forward to flying it, at least it is a right hand rotation machine that is the same size as my Venture!

Mine has been blinged up to the hilts - but never flew only hovered,

Matt,

The stories about gearbox failure are greatly exaggerated - mostly by Neil Key, a guy known to many of us who is now banned from this forum. He had gearboxes of his own to sell, and it was therefore in his interest to persuade people that ours are faulty. In fact, we've had very few gearbox problems and they are invariably induced by something else like misalignment or balance.

Hey Matt,

No, the problem I had last year with loosign power turned out to be through the clutch/fan assembly being loose on the gearbox output shaft. I fitted a new clutch thinking it was that, but then later realised it was the whole drive slipping.

As to gearbox failures I just remember one which was found to have been assembled slightly off line, which then caused a severe rubbing and excess heat being generated.
Other than that no other failures, not even on Bell Blokes Turbine Predator which has been seriously abused by fitting massive length blades to it

This year at Charmouth I didn't fly the model as the gyro went down when I powered it up on the flight line, needless to say I was gutted not being able to fly it but glad it went on the ground

Hi there, secondhand Predators with the Wren engine represent a real bargain. I absolutely love mine which now has 130 hours on the engine. I rebuilt the engine at 80 hours, which cost about £130 and 8 hours of work in total. The original airframe 'Miro' with 80 hours went in due to a radio problem. But Predator'Miro 2' is going strong.

I have to say that I have never had a flame-out though, or any kind of mechanical problems with either the Predator or the Wren engine. Both are super, super reliable and nothing has ever even worked loose on it.

My only gripe with the Predator was that after the crash, getting parts for the Predator was a real problem, but I am told that this has been sorted, and I have ordered some spares recently with no problems.

So what you have is an excellant combination that you will be able to use daily with little or no maintenance only checking.
The engine is very tough and will start and run with routine monotony. Even after I buried mine in the dirt, I cleaned it off and ran it up now it's back in the heli and has done another 50 hours.

The bearings in the gearbox have never been changed, nothing has ever been done to the gearbox......so

Good luck and have fun!!

PS. Don't save it for best as it's too good for best, fly it everyday!!

hi
yeah i got it from Peter Wales, he only hovered it,

so it has not done much since then, i need some help setting it up, as i am unfamiliar with the wren FADEC, the jetcat was plug and play, it seems pretty simple according the manual, but as always with something i am unfamiir with i need to run it past someone before i start up

But i have to say despite being told to sell it ASAP i am really looking forward to flying it.

Hi folks, just placed a nasty order to Century UK last week for spares, you know the kind of bits that I didn't think they'd have but that are vital for the Predator. In total there were 40 seperate components and they managed to supply me with 39. So only 1 part is on back order.......not bad eh? So I'm happy now.

Ps, It may have escaped your attention Predator fans, but Century have improved the Predator vastly and not even squeeked a word of it to anyone. Simple but vital things like, there are now 3 grub screws on the torque tube drives instead of 1. Now that's more like it!!!
And the tail gearbox case is now 1mm thicker all over and.... I could go on but I won't.
Well all this can only mean one thing, a Great helicopter has just got greater, which means that Century will probably discontinue it soon..

Wren-predator set up!

Hi Mattjen these are my settings when I used rotertec 720mm blades
ECU –at idle : 45000rpm…….and max : 125000 rpm
Futaba T8ups PCM1024
Normal mode throttle settings
1 = 0….2 = 60…3 = 83…4 = 90…5 = 100
Normal mode pitch settings
-3 to + 9
Idle 1 throttle settings
1 = 82….2 = 82…3 = 82…4 = 90…5 = 100
Idle 1 pitch setting
- 3 to + 9
Idle up 2 throttle settings
1 = 100… 2 = 90… 3 = 80…4 = 90…5 = 100
Idle 2 pitch settings
- 9 to + 9
Throttle hold pitch setting – 3 to +12…
matt I start in normal mode. and then fly in idle up 1 and I land in idle up 1, if you land in normal mode it will come in like a brick its not best!
I go into idle up 2 to fly aerobatics my friends call it scare-abatics but it will flip or roll and sit inverted perfect! You will probably have to tweak the above settings to suit your flying style.
Hope this helps. cheers hayabusa

Predator fan ???

Group,

I noticed in one of the photos of Mattjen Predator, a rather odd fan on the gearbox, it appears to be two Century fans back to back. Is this an aftermarket mod or what? what is the method used ot mount them??

Doug

that fan is not the standard predator fan, it is a wren modified fan that fits onto the hub upside down using 4 xM3 x 6 screws.

this is then fitted to the output shaft of the gearbox

the part number for the fan is 675 the screws and washers are parts no,721

the clutch shoe then fits on top..

Hope this helps
