No Lou, it goes back to personal responsibility. If you are a property owner or renter, you are a complete moron if you have no insurance. It doesn't matter if you are in a blue state or red state. If you own property, you owe it to yourself financially, to make sure you are properly covered including having flood insurance if you live in a flood plain or on the coast.
I think we've all had enough of the red state welfare queens complaining about where federal tax money is going...
Isn't that pot calling the kettle black? I mean, how many illegal immigrants are sucking your state government dry?

I don't know about the bridge being Bush's fault but I do know that the state of CA requested emergency funds several times because we knew we were at risk for severe wildfires. Bush denied that funding, 1200 homes burned down, many of them were just one mile from my home.
there are times when taxes should be used for this kind of thing.

bet you didn't know that 80% of the wildland firefighters are correctional facility inmates working for $1/hour. They chose that job, and if they decided to work in the laundry instead, the state would be bankrupt.

But you are not very good at it so stop trying

Difference is I didn't censor anyone, I turned you off so I personally didn't waste time reading your worthless babble that just bumped the topic. Anyone else could read it and you could still post babble. I didn't prevent you from posting. I don't start these topics, only point out the obvious deficiencies.
and yet you keep coming back even if you dont get it go figure.

the last part....too easy...ill let that one go...unless...nah.

LOL, so let me get this straight, if you have insurance, your house will not burn down. If you don't, your house will burn down? WTF?

You can't be serious with that post. You just can't...

and as far as immigrants go, your statement is a non-sequitur but I'll bite...

Immigrants provide cheap labor and investing in their childrens health and education is not only just a good idea, it would be stupid not to...

But if you think insurance will prevent fires, you probably have never heard of the baby boomer problem so...nevermind...

I agree. The states have a better idea of what their individual problems and solutions should be.
Sounds like something you heard Bush say. It's retarded. Only morons such as those in this administration dont know how to respond to a hurricane after being warned that there may be serious loss of life. Even IF your statement was true, states still need federal funds for certain things. Stop listening to O'Reilly and learn something about how government works...
I'll need to dig for the story but you had one area that banned any attempt at a fire barrier.
Sounds like a Faux News fake story to me.

it's not too bad actually. The Governor is a Dem and that shows that not everyone here is a redneck

I like this state actually. I know it shows as "red" but most people here are pretty intelligent. A lot of caring people, the pace of life is a little slower, and the wife and I are really happy.

The Firefighter thing I thought was interesting. My dad is a Battalion Chief in South San Diego, and told me that they were the hardest working firefighters he'd ever seen and that they should be proud of the service they provide to the state.

That's cool, glad to hear the 'transplant' is going well.

On the firefighter thing though, I just wonder how they keep them from running...

Lou, you missed my point entirely. My point, is the private sector is what makes this country go round. If people are properly covered, they won't need the government's assistance other than possibly an SBA loan as the rebuilding process commences. That was my point. I am talking about after the fact, not fire prevention.

Derek you're just repeating FoxNews/O'Reilly talking points now...

So we should just get rid of fire departments and ambulances altogether according to your logic.

Hell, why do we need doctors, all we need is more morticians!

Gotta love the south...

You said its all about "personal responsibility" instead of government funding.

After the Texas energy thieves (Enron et al) robbed us blind we needed help from the Federal goverment. The moron refused, so 1200 homes burned down.

Most people had plenty of insurance, but ask the ones who lost family members or even family heirlooms if 'more insurance' was the answer.

That's what happens when you regurgitate Fox News talking points, they make you look silly...

It's hard not to get emotional responses out of people on this subject. I consider myself liberal, not greenpeace, vegan liberal, but liberal as I care about what happens to everyone, not just the wealthy.

Live and let live man. Sometimes our fellow brothers need a helping hand. That's why I would consider myself a liberal. If a man and his family are hungry, they need a meal TODAY, not a job. They can get a job tomorrow.

Why did CA need to get it's energy from Texas? Because they are too "green" to build new facilities in their state. It got itself into that mess. When you vote in politicians that promise all these grandiose ideas without explaining how they are going to build the foundation to support it then you get this kind of thing. Homeowners that do what it takes to protect their property can get in legal trouble for it. That's retarded. That's California polices. That's what you voted for. Why should someone from a more intelligent state pay the cost of the stupidity of the politicians you put in office in your state? Maybe if you blamed the people who’s policies created the mess then you could vote them out and finally turn that mess around. The state has been badly mismanaged for a very long time, cripples business with absurd regulation, cripples it's citizens with absurd policy, and yet none of this seems to sink in. It must be the federal government that just hates CA.

Hate to break it to you, but that makes you a conservative. Conservative donate more to charity than liberals (yes its a fact). Likely because the liberal mindset is that its the governments job to feed the poor.

I couldn't agree more, my only caveat to that, is the man who needs a meal, must at least try and show that he is making an effort to find a job not just riding the help to be doing so. That is where I probably differ from your point of view. I agree, a meal today and job tomorrow, but just make sure tomorrow gets here and we don't live in today forever.

I see it in my profession all the time. I'll go to someone's house, they have four kids running around and pregnant with another, and have the nicest cars in their driveway. They get all of their healthcare free of charge from the government and in no way are making an effort to provide for their family.

But welfare is another topic.

Havoc is just full of Repub party talking points today...

The CA energy crisis was fake. The energy companies admitted in court that they were manipulating the supply to cheat customers out of more money. They were turning off the power during peak hours and causing artificial blackouts. Many businesses went under as a result of their thievery. Enron execs were caught on tape bragging about all this. All of this was caused by Repub deregulation which allowed Texas thieves to buy the utility companies. Green policies had nothing to do with it. You really need to pay more attention and stop watching Faux News...

BTW, when CA asked Bush to step in to protect us from the Texas thieves, what do you think he did? Nothing, because those were his friends doing the stealing...

Also, if your states are so 'intelligent' why are we in CA supporting you? We pay more in Fed taxes per capita than we take in and you pay less than you take in which means you are sucking us dry because you can't support yourselves...

Thats why they call you the "red state welfare queens"...

ok, well whatever. I feel how I feel. Typically I don't feel like a conservative. I believe in a womans right to choose, i believe that people should be able to &*^% whoever they want and have the same tax status as a married man and woman, and I believe that religion for the most part should be private and not in school, nor in government, I do not believe in capital punishment, I think the war in iraq is the worst mistake this country has made in years, and I hate bush. So if that makes me a conservative...oh well.

Maybe if you would stop watching the Communist News Network you would learn something outside your left coast ideology. You had three major power suppliers that were about to go bankrupt. They are not allowed to charge fair market prices. Instead Gray Davis spent 50 millon a day to buy wholesale power. Then proposed to float billions in bonds to pay for power purchases in the future. This to restore money already spent. Davis would not remove the price caps on the existing in-state power companies.

Other states passed deregulation laws and it didn't turn into California's mess. That's because they don't have your politicians. Davis didn't want his voters to see their price go up and the short term patch to create this scenario blew up in his face.

In a ten year span, you had no new power plants built yet a 30% increase in demand. What does that do to the price? What does that do to the state if artificially capped by politicians? You had energy demand increase by 30% in a 10 year span while no new power plants were built due to environmental activists that stopped construction on any attempts.

So California left itself open to the Enron's and other crooks because it wouldn't let the legit businesses operate for fear of a price spike knocking them out of office.
BTW, when CA asked Bush to step in to protect us from the Texas thieves, what do you think he did? Nothing, because those were his friends doing the stealing...
You voted for the thieves in your state. You were stuck buying power outside the state because you wouldn't let your in-state companies stay competitive or add plants.
Also, if your states are so 'intelligent' why are we in CA supporting you? We pay more in Fed taxes per capita than we take in and you pay less than you take in which means you are sucking us dry because you can't support yourselves...
Actually you drop to 18th when you take into account the larger number of resources that can be taxed.
Thats why they call you the "red state welfare queens"...
It is true that the utter contempt liberals have for "fly-over" states affects the desire of the rest of the US to use our taxes to help the upper class rebuild homes next to firewood so they can have a picturesque view instead of directing them to the poor who seek the lower property values of land in flood and hurricane susceptible areas.
