Howdy,

Last year I was not plagued by deer flies, this year they are biting my face, legs, arms, and wont leave me alone. They are RUTHLESS!!!

I was told drier sheets work...tried it, did not work...do I need more?

Any other tricks to keep them away?

Im going to be the one who says "A bug made me crash!!!" I hate bugs when they are on me.

How about one of those new high tech devises...what are they called? A fly swatter?

Sorry, just could not resist.

Will insect repellant do any good?

Man, I did not think the Northerners had that problem. I do not think there is anything you can do to stop a yellow fly. Those things can be mean. We also have sand gnats which can be equally annoying. They attack with sheer numbers.

Have you seen what that stuff will do when it comes in contact with plastic? It eats it up pretty bad. I just do not see how it can be any good for your health.

Some interesting facts about deer flies. Only the female bites, if they cannot find other animals to feed on. The male flies feed off of other flowering plants. The flies are born on water, like the mosquito. The flies can fly for miles in search of food, this makes them hard to spray, and harder to kill. The deet will not prevent them from biting, only slightly hinder them. They only like direct sunlight for a short period of time, and must retreat back to the trees, or for other cover. I have searced for years for a way to destroy these very annoying flies, but to no avail.

The hydrochloric acid in your stomach right now is harmful to your health but i dont see it causing widespread problems.

I would think that since DEET has been around since 1946, someone would have come up with the problems if there were any...

Horseflies, our primary concern here in the northeast, are attracted to humans in part from the carbon dioxide that we give off when breathing. DEET primarily functions as a carbon dioxide blocker. It binds to the receptors of the CO2 detectors on the insects and prevents the receptors from receiving CO2.

smoldering fire stand down wind and they will stay away or a smoker with wood chips. you can try what they used to do in the old days and rub mud on all exposed skid this will prevent biting. i was down to the mha ff this year they keep going after my ears, i wish i had brought a straw hat with net just top keep them from my heads. i saw others using a spotter. just to keep them off while u fly. but in all reality, i am sure both the bug s eating u and getting swatted with a fly swatter gets old quick, well it did for me any how.

So is it all right to ingest it? That way you could just sweat it out over the next few hours and enjoy bug free flying.

Deerflys are pretty annoying, but I think Blackflies are the worst. They are so fast that they bite and you rarely are able to swat them to kill them, they fly away so fast. You can get peppered with bites pretty quick unless you are in a reasonably strong wind. Just out of the wind, they will destroy you!

Up in Michigan's upper peninsula the Horseflys are enormous. There are times when you swat them hard and they just fly crooked for a bit then all is fine. You have to swat, grab, and squish to get the proper satisfaction.

I was on a canoe trip a few weeks ago and there was one spot on the river where there was a deerfly hatch. I had no less than 15-20 on me at any given time. However they were not biting so I figured that they were too young and didn't bite yet or something like that. It was a bit unnerving at first, but when none of them bit it was a huge relief especially since I was just wearing shorts.

I've never tried Deet for anything other than knats and mosquitos. Hopefully it works on the bigger beasts as well
