Hey guys. According to JetCat USA, they are working on a new kerostart plug that should be out soon. I'm assuming that they are addressing these issues with the new plug. I plan on trying one out when they are available. Fortunately for my pocket but unfortunately for the XLV, I've been too buisy with work (traveling) to fire up my new cat. Soon enough I hope!

Kero start

Matt, the kero you sent back to me , has a fault, I did a voltage test on it and it would not glow red, it just smoked a bit then went dead, I will send it back to JetCat for a replacement, pity really that was one of five I got with the new turbines, will keep you posted

Matt,
I'm not sure what the changes are but I think it's the wire material inside the ceramic or maybe a change in manufactures. Maybe someone from JetCat will chime in and explain this one as the existing one seems to be a very fancy and expensive glow plug, prone to failure whenever. You can buy a lot of regular glo plugs for the costs of one of these.

Matt - I wouldn't have thought running the plug without fuel would cause it to overtemp and burn out. There's also no limitations on the testing time specified in the manual. What would burn the plug out would be running it at a voltage above what is specified, a bit like an electric fire really.

DK - is this JetCat USA who are working on the new plug or JetCat Germany? Despite the price though, Kerostart is very cool and sounds very scale with the rapid ticking sound of the kero solenoid as the engine ignites - sounds like the spark igniters in many full-size engines.

Must say all these problems are different from my experiences. I've had great luck so far with the Kerostart system and continue to get rapid and reliable starts with a charge every two flights (for the radio battery mainly rather than the ECU pack). ECU pack is currently a 4500mAh NiMh though the 2400mAh worked OK also.

,,,Ok I've probably jinxed the turbine now - next time I go out it will probably splutter into life then go up in flames

Kerostart igniter

Matt,Coolrunning has said what I would have said, about testing, it should have a healthy glow yours did not get hot, the ceramic is intact, so it is not that.
DKTek, when the kerostart works it is far superior for scale starts, I have already posted on how critical the start pump voltage has to be
Perry, I found with the PHT3 in the EC135, I can slow the blades down a lot quicker by going into hold, then apply full pitch, do not got to full stick right away,( the heli jumps off the ground) but feed it in, until the blades stop, switch out of hold, back into nomal to operate throttle trim to stop turbine. I know you have the SPH5, but the principle remains and it should help

Hey guys,

My info comes from Bob W. at JetCat USA. I ordered the igniter with my SPH5 and that's when Bob suggested I waite for the newer version, which I am. It's coming from Germany. As I understand it, the igniter isn't manufactured by JetCat Germany but is farmed out to another company. That's why I think they MAY have changed vendors and modified the design slightly. Either way, I hope it gets done sooner than later. I'd love to have it installed for my first start up. I like the cleaner layout of the tubing without the gas start items.

newer version Kero Start

DK, Bob has been giving out that advise for a long time now, JetCat have changed the design, originally the wire element was spiral wrapped around the outside of the ceramic element, on the latest ignighter the wire element is not visible, (I can only assume, it is a bar within the ceramic element) the one Matt had was new from JetCat less than a month ago, again I can only assume these are the latest, there was a long period, when the ignighter was not available, I hope this one of Matt's is a one off, as I have a bundle of Ignighters with new turbines in the store room

Just to add some kind of timeframe to the discussion. My own Kerostart igniter was delivered back in May and is one of the revision with the internal heating coil.

That was via Hobbyparts. I understand the engines and accessories landed from Germany then were shipped straight out though so not far off direct from factory
