Fascinating. Anyone know the mathematical theory behind that? Thats assuming it works all every time. Only works with whole numbers apparently.

hi
it works with fractions too , if you try 12.3 X 3.21 = ?

count the number of digits to the right of the decimal points , ( in this case three ) then just put the decimal point three positions from the right in your answer ( 39.483 ) , dana

If you think about it, it is just a graphical representation of numbers rather than being anything inherently clever (that's not to say it isn't cool!).

If it were 2 x 2, you'd have this: // , intersecting this: \\ , and so end up with 4 points of intersection. It's sort of common-sensy. To look at it another way, let's randomly say we want to do 7 x 9.

You draw a box. 7cm x 9cm, and then split it up into a 1cm grid. If you count the number of boxes, you get 63! Sure, obvious, but that video isn't really much more than that.
