Here in Michigan a bldg. permit is good for a year. I am not sure on a extention.

I put a addition on my house in 97. I had all my expections with the exception of my finals. I lived in the house for 4 years after. I had finally received a notice from the city. The pretty much said to get my finals or it would be settled in court. I gave in and called for my finals, took the day off work. And waited for the inspectors. All went well and passed.
That same year my state equalized value jumped, along with my taxes. Well, I put the inevitable off for 4 years anyhow.

Here in Cincinnati you have 6 months to start the project from time of permit being issued. You then have 2 years from the time of permit being issued to get a final occupancy.

I deal with building departments in Kentucky and Indiana and they are all different.

Your county should have a website that explains most of it. Most or the sites are "the county".org.

Never had to get an extension for a job.

My problem is my brother in law took all the money and started it and is now broke. My addition is framed and all new windows are in except for ft door and bay window. the house has been striped from outside siding and it looks awful with all the black paper just blowing off and into neighbors yards
We can take a small bank loan to side the house but cant finish the 2 new bed rooms down stairs or the new bigger kitchen up stairs
So once again i am stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Call your building dept. and explain to them what has happened and they will work with you on a resolution. I'm sure they will come up with a plan for you to follow. Projects getting dropped like that by someone that was paid to do the work happens all the time. Totally sucks!

Way worse when a family member does something like that!

The building dept. would rather you call them and ask questions rather than having to post a stop work order. Give em' a call tomorrow and see what they say.

You can get a temporary certificate of occupancy, but the house has to be safe, which is what they will want to check out for you. TCO usually runs $75-$100 and will allow you to live in the house until the other things can be addressed.

They may make you wrap the exposed exterior parts of the house with Tyvec house wrap.

An inspector will go over all of it with you.

Good luck!
