Using the RotorWorkz HFE frame, you can get those A123 to fit

I gonna try with a 13s configuration as shown here, if that's not enough, I gonna go with another motor and go for 15s.
If I where to move the gyro from the plate in the back, I could probably cram in more cells if needed.

Flighttests tomorrow if weather permits.

Packs was made out of dewalt, using existing connections (did not solder end to end), reason why I did two packs is that my charger only go to 10s

Edit: I am replacing 10s1p 3700 lipo with this setup.
Total weight of the new pack is 1000 grams compared to 968 on my 10s1p lipo, voltage will be slightly higher then the lipo.
Will be intresting to see how it works.

Did some test-flights today, result ~ so so..
Compared to a high performance lipo it was worse, however we had -8C (17F) here, I suspect that the A123 with its lower Mah's got punished harder then the lipo which was not used at max rating..

However, for a sportflyer/easy 3D, this is a perfect setup.

I took a risk, I used the Jazz 55-10-32 which is only rated up to 43 volt, worked fine though (initial volt on the A123 is higher, but as soon as you spoolup it drops)

One flight A123 and a comparison with a TP 10s1p 3850SLX

However, I dont trust my battery making skills 100%, so I will make another set to see if I might have got a bad solder or something like it..

(As you can see on the RPM I kind of overdid it, hehe, need to drop that a bit)

Good bye Mr Lipo!

After more or less killing TWO 10s lipo last weekend, Ive been hunting the optimal A123 setup for my T600.

Today I can only say YES!

15s1p A123 will replace my 10s lipos, even for 3D.

Key is however setup, a bad setup on A123 and its performing REALLY bad, not even sure ive found the optimal yet, but I got better performance/same then my FP 10s packs.

Here is my setup.

T-Rex 600 using RotorWorkz HFE frame.
Neu 1912/1Y with 13T
CC 85HV controller
AeroSpire e-Governor
1 x 5s1p A123 stick config
1 x 10s1p A123 shotgun (using solderless kit from MEC)

Just tested some punchout's and rainbows in the backyard (actually the rainbow was even on the neighbors backyard hehe, he's at work.)
And the power is there!

I got it pretty good yesterday, but today when the E-Governor arrived, it was the total success, A123 flux so much in voltage, so you need a good governor, must say it exceeded all my expectations.

Overall weight was 250 grams higher then my old 10s1p 3700 setup.

OBS: This was in -5C with windchill making it -14C (23F/6F), Lipos would have died in a hardbeat

Flighttime as you can see: 4 minutes 15 seconds until voltage sags, I suspect it will raise a bit when temp is higher, A123 at such low temp is only running at 85-90% capacity.

For 3D you need 14,15s to get performance, they are only 2300mah, so you need to get the voltage up to get the watts rating needed.
You could go with 8s2p, but that would weigh alot (1120 grams just the cells)

For sport flying there is more options.

Y not run them in 2P as they do with lipo's ? 7S 2P (14 cells) would probably work fine .

Hi Mel

I am going to try the A123 cells for my Roxxter 55 , will go for 12S and hope the Jazz 55 10 32 will be able to handle the voltage
Just a Q, are there any need for balancing those 123 cells, and will I be able to use my graupner ultramat 30 and wich program to charge(Lilo / Lipo ?

Ive tried 13s on my Jazz, that worked

However, I think 15s is really needed to get good performance.

No, I dont balance my batteries, they seem to selfbalance.
(TP1010/210 combo was too slow, so it often stopped charging due to too large imbalance, but when you let the battery rest, they self-balance within a few minutes)

Hi Mel. Ok - but I don’t understand the right power use for charging the cells, if we take a example. 14 cells will give 50.4 V (this is watt i am aming for like the 10S)

The only way to make this right, must be to charge the packet over to times on lipo program, like it was a 6S setup, also 25,2V = 7 celle a 3.6V and put them together

To be sure I think for this setup I will order the new Castle Creations Phoenix HV 85A will take the 50V

What charger do you have?,

I suggest getting a charger that supports A123 Cells, there is coming more and more of them.

Latest 902 has the possible to charge A123, so perhaps you can upgrade yours?
