It's so new I think I'm going to wait awhile until Microsoft has some of the potential "bugs" worked out...

OS X is much nicer than XP or Vista so if you're just trying to surf the net and send some email get a MAC. If you need to run a flight sim, then stick with XP for now. Vista includes Direct10 which according to MS will not be released as an upgrade for XP. XP's DirectX9 will run any game currently on the market and DirectX10 games are still a ways away. I suspect it might be over a year before we start to see DX10 games becase the companies that make the games want to develop for the most popular platforms so they can sell the most copies. Personally I'm going to wait until we start to see some DX10 games before I even consider the upgrade that will also give MS some time to work out the bugs.

I like vista but there's still too many things that aren't compatible so it's always good to dual boot.

aside from the obvious interface differences, they changed the way programs access your program files folder, and they also made a huge movement with anti piracy. if you have anything illegal (read: downloaded music) vista will force you to delete them.

if you want to upgrade for the eye candy, get a copy of fedora core or ubuntu linux. they are very customizable in terms of UI and they dont cost a thing. my machine is a dual boot with windows xp pro and arch linux, but ubuntu is much more user friendly.

Been using it the past two months.

Wannabe MAC interface. They ought to fire the designer and hire someone from MAC.

Resource pig!

Incompatible with a lot of applications, so far.

It will take some time for improvements. Prefer XP for now.

Again, user interface....it ain't no MAC!

haven't heard of the anti piracy thing. There is no way for them to tell if you have ripped the mp3's or downloaded them so there is no way they can enforce that so I believe that is made up.

I don't bother with installing any MS operating system until at least Service Pack 1. I would assume that Vista is no exception from what I've been reading.

Dont buy Vista! for now, cuz vista will accept curtain hardwares that it will work with. XP is just fine in the long run. I will keep XP for 5 to 7 years.

rip off britain and no changing it

My Posts: All  Forum  Topic

i have been vista trained for my work and had to sit the microsoft exams ect for it.

imo it is a complete linux/mac ripoff. the whole new file structure and look is a combo of linux and mac. it hogs resources pretty heavily and there is the most annoying UAC (user access control) that needs permission to do anything you ask it to do. this can be switched off but your opening up to attacks again defeating the purpose of it in first place. it was the first thing we turned off in the test labs however as it's sooooo annoying.

there are certain versions of vista that WILL NOT work with any drivers unless they are digitally signed (more money for microsoft) which makes life difficult for driver releases in the future as they need MS's sig on them to install.

it also crashed 5 high end pc's in our test labs pretty badly. my advice is do NOT update to it for a LONG time.

cheers

I've been running Vista for months via the msdn install...it SUCKS!!!! Stick with XP for as long as you can, it killed a desktop on my test network and its security settings are up its own ass. I totally agree with raptorheli2.

Warning...This hobby is very addictive and may damage your wealth

i've been running vista for several months and its been working great for me. havent had any compatability issues and everything i need is installed so its my main operating system now.

prices will depend on the version selected but that will range from $300 to $500 for the Vista Ultimate (grin >

Vista IS a resource hog... and thats because of its new GUI, all the flashy windows and new fetures. that takes power but thats where today's faster hardware comes in to play. Vista is for newer machines with 2 gigs of ram or more, not 5 year old porkers with 128mb of memory thats only good for solitaire. people try and run VISTA on a slower machines and it runs like crap and say it sucks...

I havent had a single problem and im a power-user... i dont know why anyone would say it sucks...

you have 30 days to use VISTA RTM without having to pay for it. just download it (perfectly legal, you can even get it from Microsoft) and istall it but dont put it a key. run it and see if you like it. then decide wether or not to upgrade to it.

Vista is the next OS... so best to get familiar with it.. Xp will be phased out and forgotten like 95/98/MEetc...

i had no choice to use it. Came on the laptop i bought at BestBuy. they don't sell computers without Vista. wish I had waited. Too many programs don't work on it and getting other program crashes. had to return first laptop because of the blue screen of death. Go the replacement and wish I had waited.
