Glad somebody else is bothered by poor grammar when reading threads!
Wonderful. From the looks of things more are bothered by poor grammar than those who are not bothered by it. I just brought it up hoping that there would be some meaningful discussion somewhere. As for those who don't care about this, they can read this and move on; Ignorance (and grammar) is bliss.

Sharam ... if one person sees things differently then I have made a difference.

reddragon, to tell you the truth, I have been pleasantly surprised by the abundance of praise re this thread; I honestly did not think people cared. There have been similar threads in the past but most of those went the other way!

So, yes, I agree. Even if you can change one person's mind, you have made a difference. Thanks!

More people care than you'd think -- and it often shows up in subtle ways.

When interviewing potential new employees for key positions, employers often give unofficial 'points' for good writing skills, because a lack of those skills often equates to a lack of verbal skills too. Both are essential abilities even these days for nearly all worthwhile work.

The one that still annoys the hell out of me is people using the word "then" when they mean "than" !

At the end of the day , it gets dark .

My point exactly! I have interviewed many people over the years and I have horror stories to tell regarding this issue. I can not tell you how many times I have read resumes and letters with glaring errors. I have passed them by of course but the ones who get through the screening process are just as bad. The worst part is that they sit back and wonder why they were never considered for the position.

It does get worse.

I have a coworker who is an english nut. He is so anal about it almost to a fault. When he lived in Houston, he actually wrote to a grocery store and complained about the express lane having the words "10 items or less". He said that the correct way for saying it would be "10 items or fewer" and the grocery store actually responded to him with a letter saying it was cost prohibitive to change those signs throughout their stores. They did send him a gift certificate for $25.00 though and thanked him for bringing it to their attention.

One of my pet peeves, is its and it's. I see this all the time where one is used in place of the other. Its shows possession and it's is a contraction for it is. Get it right people! I also hate run-on sentences where the poster will cover four different topics in the same sentence without any punctuation.

After a while I guess we feel that so many are doing it what is the point? I try to suck it up and read through everything but after months on end it is torture. Run ons are the worst. The posts don't make a bit of sense.

Derek533: That's the one I was thinking of. I always notice when I see homemade signs saying "Rabbit's" or "Watermelon's" for sale.

I find it frustrating when language is used incorrectly, such that it doesn't make sence. For example "Will you teach me ?" often gets said as "Will you learn me ?" what the fu**s that all about.
sence???

I emphasize to my kids that they should master the English language, including spelling and pronunciation. So few people know how to communicate properly in their native tongue that it will surely set them apart when it comes to getting into a good school or getting the right job.

it does get a little annoying sometimes, people using the wrong word, form of the word or misspelled word but at least they try. some of us lack a good and proper education because of circumstances beyond our control. but the thing that bothers me more than poor english grammar and composition is the folks that think they are better than everyone else when in fact they are not. more often than not, the people that lack in one area make it up somewhere that others lack. if anyone posting here does not lack in some respect, let us see you walk on water.
